The History of the Portuguese Guitar and Fado Music
The Portuguese guitar, the central instrument in Fado music, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Originally known as the cítole, it was played by nobility in royal courts before eventually spreading to other social classes. By the 17th and 18th centuries, the instrument, also called the cittern, was heard in theaters, taverns, and even barber shops.
Fado music itself is an iconic genre from Portugal, believed to have originated in the 1820s in Lisbon, though its roots go much deeper. Known for its soulful melodies and melancholic lyrics, Fado often conveys themes of longing, loss, and nostalgia.
