THE EXHIBITIONS 'DIEGO & FRIDA: LIFE CHRONICLES' AND 'COVARRUBIAS & FRIENDS': EXPLORING ARTISTIC LEGACIES

Unveil vibrant worlds in an artistic odyssey where passion, friendship, and creativity converge in stunning exhibitions

The Embassy of Mexico in Indonesia, in collaboration with Museum Pasifika, presents two significant art exhibitions: “Diego & Frida: Life Chronicles” and “Covarrubias & Friends.” These exhibitions combine photographic documentation of the lives of iconic Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo with artworks created in Bali by their friend Miguel Covarrubias, as well as works by other artists close to him.

Diego and Frida: Life Stories Through the Lens

“Diego & Frida: Life Chronicles” features a collection from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes de México and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo. This exhibition showcases the life stories of the famous couple, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, celebrated not only for their charisma but also for their significant impact on 20th-century Mexican art and culture.

Visitors can witness pivotal moments in Rivera and Kahlo's lives through a series of photographs taken by renowned artists and close friends, such as Guillermo Kahlo and Guillermo Zamora. The exhibition provides deeper insight into Frida Kahlo's life, highlighting her physical suffering, unwavering strength, and tireless political activism. A key highlight includes the last photographs of Frida, captured just days before her death in July 1954, reflecting her enduring spirit and dedication.

Exploring the Works of Miguel Covarrubias and His Friends

The “Covarrubias & Friends” exhibition focuses on the works of Miguel Covarrubias, which include canvas paintings, murals, lithographs, and illustrations. Covarrubias was a multifaceted artist known as a teacher, choreographer, writer, and expert in regional and Hispanic cultures. He and Diego Rivera shared a close friendship, with Rivera also serving as Covarrubias's mentor, granting him the opportunity to create six monumental murals titled “Maps of the Pacific” for the Pacific House in San Francisco in 1940.

This exhibition highlights works produced by Covarrubias during his creative period in Bali, alongside pieces from other renowned artists such as Walter Spies, Han Snel, Auke Sonnega, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur, Dolf Breetvelt, and Diego Menendez. Additionally, photographs of Bali taken by Rosa Covarrubias will be displayed, adding visual and cultural richness to the exhibition.

A Collaborative Effort to Bring Art to the Public

The initiative for these exhibitions was led by Philippe Augier, founder of Museum Pasifika, with support from Alonso Martín Gomez-Favila of the Embassy of Mexico in Indonesia. The exhibitions are curated by Marlowe Bandem, a prominent art expert and one of the founders of Bali Archive 1928.

Running from October 3 to November 3, 2024, these exhibitions offer a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to delve into the lives of global art icons and their artistic communities. They are not merely visual displays; rather, they provide a journey through time that invites visitors to reflect on the lives, struggles, and creativity of artists who have left an indelible mark on the world of art.
