NIRMANA KINETIC SPACE: A CAPTIVATING FUSION OF MOTION, TECHNOLOGY AND ART

NIRMANA KINETIC SPACE: A CAPTIVATING FUSION OF MOTION, TECHNOLOGY AND ART

A sophisticated visual experience that awakens the senses and engages the mind

Tucked beneath the Japanese restaurant SU MA and SHŌ Bar in Jakarta’s Melawai district, Nirmana Kinetic Space offers an art experience that is both unique and immersive. This newly opened gallery serves as an experimental platform for kinetic art, a form that comes to life through movement and the passage of time.

Created by Sembilan Matahari in collaboration with Elwin Ardririanto, an AI and IoT programmer with international experience in kinetic art installations, Nirmana connects the worlds of technology and aesthetics. Launched in 2020 and gaining wider public attention through a collaboration at the 2022 Head in the Clouds concert, Nirmana has now entered a new chapter with its permanent exhibition space.

Seven installations are arranged across six interconnected rooms, forming a circular path that guides visitors through a visual and emotional exploration. After a brief introduction, guests are free to wander and experience each work at their own pace. Some rooms are quiet and introspective, while others are filled with dynamic sounds and movement.

Among the opening installations, Saujana immediately showcases the marvels of technology. On a coffee table, a magnetic ball glides over fine sand, creating intricate patterns through 125 programmed cycles. The piece evokes Bruce Shapiro’s Sisyphus, where the ball continuously draws and erases designs in a never-ending loop.

Deeper into the space, Amerta symbolizes strength and continuity. This large, wing-shaped metal structure stretches across an open courtyard. Against Jakarta’s night sky, its silhouette resembles a manta ray swimming gracefully, inviting the imagination to drift into the depths of the sea.

Some installations are interactive and invite participation. Bena, a bench shaped like a wave, encourages visitors to sit and ride its flowing surface, turning kinetic art into functional design. In Senandika, guests can choreograph 240 synchronized wooden blocks, reshaping the wall into personalized forms and messages.

Nirmana is more than just a gallery. It is a living laboratory where art and technology meet, a space where mechanical precision and creative expression merge to offer new ways of experiencing movement and design.

Nirmana Kinetic Space is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, with three daily sessions available: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased on-site, subject to availability. Plan your visit and discover how motion, technology and creativity come together in a space that invites both wonder and reflection.
