TANJUNG WAKA FESTIVAL: EMBRACING THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN NORTH MALUKU
Showcasing a seamless blend of natural beauty and local traditions, while celebrating the vibrant richness of art and culture
The Tanjung Waka Festival (FTW) 2024 is currently being held in the Sula Islands Regency, North Maluku, from December 13 to 15, 2024. As one of the leading events focused on sustainability, this festival offers a tourist experience that is not only captivating but also supports the growth of an environmentally friendly, tourism-based economy. The event carries the theme ‘Eco-event Tanjung Waka Festival,’ which has been recognized as one of the top 10 destinations in Indonesia and a winner of the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) 2024 by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia.
As part of the effort to promote key tourist destinations in the Sula Islands, the event is being organized as a strategic step to accelerate local economic growth, as well as the development of Community-Based Tourism and Eco Events, aimed at introducing Tanjung Waka Beach as a new tourist destination in Indonesia.
Tanjung Waka Beach, the main venue of the festival, is offering mesmerizing natural views. With its fine white sand and crystal-clear blue waters, this beach is known as the "Beach of a Thousand Stars." Its natural beauty serves as a major attraction, drawing visitors to experience a peaceful and calming atmosphere. Activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and diving are popular here, thanks to the clear waters and rich biodiversity in the surrounding area.
In addition to its natural beauty, FTW is also featuring various exciting events, such as music performances, arts, cultural parades, and delectable local cuisine. These activities are expected to continue boosting the flow of both domestic and international tourists.
The success of FTW year after year is closely linked to the serious efforts of the Sula Islands Regency government to increase local revenue through the tourism sector while simultaneously making genuine efforts to preserve the environment, maintain the authenticity of arts and culture, customs, flora, and fauna, and balance the relationship between humans and nature. This fosters new creative economy growth for the Sula community. With its sustainability-focused concept, the festival will continue to be a major attraction for tourists who wish to enjoy the natural beauty and unique culture of North Maluku on a global scale.
