REVIVING HERITAGE: THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF INDONESIA REOPENS WITH A CELEBRATION OF CULTURAL TREASURES

Revisit a vibrant cultural space where history comes alive through exhibitions of ancient artifacts and innovative, immersive technology

After being closed since September 2023, the National Museum of Indonesia has reopened its doors to the public on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. With a renewed spirit, the museum is proud to present the Repatriation Exhibition, which features 288 ancient artifacts returned from the Netherlands. This exhibition not only showcases Indonesia's rich history but also symbolizes the revitalization of public spaces that celebrate cultural heritage.

The Repatriation Exhibition highlights artifacts that reflect Indonesia's long historical journey. Among the items on display are four statues from the Singhasari Kingdom and 284 artifacts looted during the Puputan Badung and Puputan Tabanan wars. Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, emphasized that the museum's reopening is not merely a revitalization effort but a significant step toward reimagining the nation’s cultural heritage. He also stressed the vital role of museums as accessible public spaces that allow people to learn about and appreciate Indonesia's cultural wealth.

A Fresh Look for the National Museum

The National Museum of Indonesia has undergone various updates to enhance visitor experience. To cater to families, the museum has added a children's area and several temporary spaces for public activities. One notable temporary exhibition is "Beating the Gong, Pouring Fire," which tells the story of the museum's recovery efforts after a previous fire. This exhibition showcases the museum's commitment to preserving cultural heritage despite facing challenges.

In addition to the Repatriation Exhibition, visitors can enjoy the "Faces of the Archipelago" exhibition in Building A. This interactive display allows visitors to explore their resemblances with various ethnic groups from the archipelago, fostering a deeper connection with Indonesia's cultural identity.

Innovation Through Technology

The National Museum has also introduced the ImersifA space, an innovative area that merges digital technology with physical experiences. This space aims to provide visitors of all ages with a fresh perspective on Indonesia's history and culture, making the experience more engaging. Through advanced technology, visitors can delve into the rich stories and histories behind the displayed artifacts.
