SELATPANJANG WATER WAR FESTIVAL 2026 BRINGS SIX DAYS OF CELEBRATION TO KEPULAUAN MERANTI

A vibrant coastal tradition transforms the city into a joyful spectacle of culture, unity, and unforgettable public festivities

The Selatpanjang Water War Festival is currently underway as one of the flagship cultural and tourism events organized by the Government of Kepulauan Meranti Regency. Taking place from February 17 to 22, 2026, the festival is centered in Selatpanjang, the capital of the regency. For nearly a week, the city is turning into a lively celebration space that blends tradition, entertainment, and the creativity of the local community.

The Water War Festival is a long standing tradition of the Meranti community, deeply rooted in the values of togetherness and joy. During the celebration, people splash water on one another as a symbol of happiness and social connection. Over the years, the tradition has been presented in a more modern format while still preserving the cultural values that shape the region’s identity. This balance has allowed the festival to grow not only as a cultural heritage event but also as an appealing tourism attraction.

The main Water War activities are being held daily from February 17 to 22, 2026, between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM Western Indonesian Time. Throughout these hours, Selatpanjang is filled with the energy of residents and visitors who join in the festive spirit. Strong community involvement continues to play an essential role in maintaining and passing down this tradition from one generation to the next.

In addition to the main celebration, several supporting programs are adding to the excitement. One of the most anticipated highlights is the Water War Night Carnival, scheduled for February 20 to 22, 2026, starting at 9:30 PM until completion. The carnival features a nighttime parade that showcases the distinctive cultural character of Kepulauan Meranti, enhanced by light displays and cultural processions that enrich the visitor experience.

A Culinary Bazaar is also running throughout the festival period from February 17 to 22, 2026. Visitors can explore a wide range of traditional dishes from Kepulauan Meranti, while the bazaar also provides a valuable promotional platform for local micro, small, and medium enterprises. This initiative highlights the festival’s contribution not only to cultural preservation but also to local economic activity.

For coffee enthusiasts, the Seribu Cangkir Kopi program is set for February 21, 2026, beginning at 10:00 PM until completion. The event offers a warm and interactive gathering space amid the lively atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Photography Contest, held from February 17 to 20, 2026, invites both local and visiting photographers to capture the most memorable moments of the celebration.

This year, the Festival Perang Air of Kepulauan Meranti Regency has also been officially included in the Karisma Event Nusantara KEN 2026 list, based on the Minister of Tourism Decree issued on January 12, 2026. This recognition places the festival within the Ministry of Tourism’s national promotional calendar.

More than just a local event, the Water War Festival now stands as part of a wider national tourism promotion effort. Selatpanjang is celebrating a cultural occasion that brings together tradition, community participation, and a shared spirit of togetherness on one vibrant stage.
