EUROPE DAY 2026 IN JAKARTA: A ROOM BUILT ON SHARED VALUES
Europe Day 2026 was celebrated in Jakarta on May 8 with senior Indonesian ministers, EU ambassadors, and ASEAN leaders gathered at Ayana Midplaza Hotel.
On the evening of May 8, 2026, a reception hall at Ayana Midplaza Hotel in Jakarta filled with the kind of company that signals something beyond ceremony.
Senior Indonesian ministers. EU member state ambassadors. ASEAN leadership. And at the centre of it all, a date that has been marked every year since 1985 as proof that countries which were once at war can choose, deliberately and permanently, to build something together instead.
This was Europe Day 2026 in Jakarta, and the room made the argument before anyone said a word.

What Europe Day Actually Commemorates and Why Jakarta Celebrated It
Every year on May 9, the European Union celebrates Europe Day, marking peace and unity in Europe and reflecting on how countries that were once in conflict chose cooperation, partnership, and shared progress. Europe Day commemorates the historic Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed a new form of political cooperation built on the idea that countries working together on key industries are less likely to go to war with each other.
In 2026, Europe Day carried additional weight: it marked 40 years since Portugal and Spain joined the EU, and 40 years since the first official Europe Day celebrations began. A declaration written in 1950 that produced a union. A union that has now been celebrating itself publicly for four decades. And in Jakarta, that history arrived at Ayana Midplaza with Indonesian cabinet ministers in the room.
The diplomatic reception in Jakarta on May 8, 2026 was hosted by EU Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam Denis Chaibi, EU Ambassador to ASEAN Sujiro Seam, and Head of the European Investment Bank Regional Representation for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Sunita Lukkhoo-Tassone.
Who Was in the Room at Europe Day 2026 Jakarta
The guest list for Europe Day 2026 in Jakarta read like a cross-section of every institution that shapes the relationship between Europe, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno served as Guest of Honour. He was joined by Minister for Development Planning Rachmat Pambudy, Minister for Cooperatives Ferry Juliantono, and Minister for State Apparatus Utilisation Rini Widyantini.
Vice Ministers representing Human Rights, Trade, Culture, Development Planning, Migrant Workers Protection, Investment and Downstreaming, Population and Family Development, and Industry were also present, alongside the Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives and members of parliament from DPR Commissions I, III, VI, X, and XII.

Ambassador Denis Chaibi stated that the commemoration serves as a momentum to celebrate the values of peace and unity that form the foundation of the European Union, while simultaneously strengthening partnerships with strategic partners like Indonesia.
Beyond the formal diplomacy, this year's Europe Day celebration in Jakarta also includes a cultural program. The public will be invited to a traditional Irish music performance titled A Taste of Irish Trad, performed by the musical group Wofton Music, scheduled for Saturday May 16, 2026 at Taman Ismail Marzuki.
That extension of Europe Day into a public cultural event is the part of the evening that travels furthest. Diplomacy fills a reception hall. Music fills a public park. Both are part of the same conversation.
