EXPLORING ART IN THE HEART OF MENTENG THE CHARM OF CEMARA 6 GALERI TOETI HERATY MUSEUM

A vibrant cultural sanctuary where heritage, imagination, and dialogue intertwine to create an inspiring experience

In the Menteng area of Central Jakarta, Cemara 6 Galeri Toeti Heraty Museum stands as an art destination that brings together history, intellectual thought, and creative expression in one space. Situated in the heart of the capital, the museum offers a meaningful experience for visitors who wish to appreciate visual art while gaining insight into the development of Indonesian culture across different periods.

The museum was founded by Prof. Dr. Toeti Heraty Rosseno, a respected Indonesian cultural figure, philosopher, poet, and art collector. What began as her private collection gradually evolved into a public space dedicated to artistic appreciation. Since opening on 27 November 1993, Cemara 6 Galeri has served as a home for important works by modern Indonesian artists and as a venue for cultural discussion and creative exchange.

As a specialized museum focused on visual art and cultural activities, it goes beyond simply displaying artworks. Unlike conventional galleries that present works in a static format, this museum actively organizes exhibitions, discussions, cultural performances, and public programs. These activities aim to enrich artistic discourse and encourage dialogue between artists and the broader community. Through this role, the museum has established itself as one of the centers for contemporary art development and cultural conversation in Jakarta.

The collection includes works by more than 60 prominent Indonesian artists, such as Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Basoeki Abdullah, Srihadi Soedarsono, Popo Iskandar, and Mochtar Apin. A dedicated room features paintings by the artist Salim, who spent much of his life working in Paris. Altogether, the museum houses around 300 paintings that trace the journey of Indonesian visual art, from the old master era to contemporary practices. Sculptures by F. Widayanto and memorabilia from the Toeti Heraty family further enhance the richness of the collection.

Every room within the museum displays artworks representing diverse artistic styles, historical periods, and schools of thought, each reflecting significant cultural and historical values. Visitors are encouraged not only to observe the pieces but also to understand the social context, philosophical ideas, and critical perspectives behind them, in keeping with the founder’s vision.

The museum also offers a range of facilities to support visitors. These include exhibition spaces, a library, an auditorium, meeting rooms, a café, and five homestay rooms for those who wish to enjoy a more immersive stay. Parking and WiFi are available to ensure convenience. During the Lebaran period, the gallery is open from 10.00 am to 3.30 pm. It is generally closed every Monday and on national holidays. The general admission fee is 30,000 rupiah, while students pay 25,000 rupiah.

Currently managed by Dr. Inda Citraninda Noerhadi, SS., MA., the museum continues to uphold the founder’s vision by developing educational programs, exhibitions, and cultural networks. Through its ongoing initiatives, Cemara 6 Galeri Toeti Heraty Museum aims to function both as a space for learning and as an inspiring destination for cultural recreation.

A visit to this museum is more than an opportunity to see an art collection. It is an invitation to enter a reflective environment where art, culture, and ideas come together in an intimate setting amid the energy of the city.
