CAN’S GALLERY PRESENTS RESTU TAUFIK AKBAR’S SOLO EXHIBITION PENDAR MENDERMA: A REFLECTION ON LIGHT AND THE SELF

Discover a contemplative journey that intertwines and invites you to see yourself within its luminous depths

In collaboration with Artsociates, CAN’s Gallery presents a solo exhibition by artist Restu Taufik Akbar titled Pendar Menderma. Taking place from July 31 to September 1, 2025, the exhibition features ten of the artist’s newest works that explore the relationship between humans, nature, and the universe.

Through a distinctive and contemplative visual approach, Restu invites visitors to experience his artworks not just as visual pieces, but as reflective spaces. By using stainless steel mirrors as a medium in several paintings, he creates an interactive encounter that blurs the line between viewer and artwork. These pieces offer more than landscapes or abstract forms; they invite the audience to project themselves or even dissolve their presence within the frame.

The title Pendar Menderma captures the artist’s intention to explore human existence in relation to the surrounding environment. It reflects a desire to reconnect with nature through the presence of light as a powerful and symbolic medium.

Light plays a central role in the exhibition in two distinct ways. In the main gallery, it functions as conventional lighting. In a separate space, however, it becomes part of the experience itself. Visitors use handheld flashlights to illuminate the artworks, revealing vibrant and dynamic visuals in response.

A highlight of the exhibition is Insun Medal: Lina Menyela Cahna (2025), created with polyurethane, nitrocellulose, and vitrail on stainless steel mirror plates. The painting presents a forest landscape with flowing water, rendered in blue tones and silver-white strokes that suggest rivers, soil, and tree branches against a backdrop of mountains and valleys. Its reflective surface invites viewers into a personal and intimate visual dialogue.

In the interactive room, other works continue this theme, encouraging exploration and discovery through light and reflection. Despite their abstract nature, these compositions offer a rich and immersive visual narrative.

The Pendar Menderma exhibition is open to the public at CAN’s Gallery until September 1, 2025. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the gallery is closed on national holidays. Visitors are invited to reflect on the self, light, and the greater cosmos through this thoughtful and engaging body of work.
