BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2024: DISCOVERING WORLD CINEMA AND INDONESIA'S PARTICIPATION
Showcasing 279 films from 63 countries, the festival highlights young filmmakers and strengthens connections in the global film industry, featuring Indonesia's emerging presence
The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) 2024 is back, creating excitement for film lovers everywhere. Scheduled from October 2 to 11, 2024, the festival will showcase a diverse range of new films from various countries, featuring everything from indie gems to highly anticipated major productions. Since its inception in 1996, BIFF has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious film festivals in Asia.
Held annually in Haeundae-gu, Busan, South Korea, BIFF is recognized as one of Asia's most important film festivals, alongside the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Tokyo International Film Festival. In its 29th edition, BIFF aims to promote new films, introduce emerging directors to the global stage, and provide a platform for young talent to shine.
This year, the festival will feature 279 films from 63 countries, including 13 international premieres and 86 world premieres. BIFF serves not only as an awards ceremony but also as a forum for discussion and collaboration within the film industry. The opening film, "Uprising," directed by Kim Sang Man and written by Park Chan Wook, kicks off ten days filled with cinematic charm. The festival will conclude with a screening of "Spirit World," directed by Eric Khoo from Singapore and featuring the legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve.
A standout aspect of BIFF 2024 is its focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology into film production. Through various discussion sessions at the Asia Contents and Film Market (ACFM), the festival encourages exploration of innovations in the industry. A keynote address from Stability AI will also play a significant role in discussions about technology's impact on cinema.
Additionally, this year, BIFF honors actor Lee Sun Kyun, celebrated for his performances in the film "Parasite" and the series "My Mister." This recognition underscores Lee's vital contributions to the Korean film industry and his role in inspiring young filmmakers.
Indonesia's participation in the festival is particularly noteworthy. After being the focus country last year, Indonesia is once again showcasing a collection of its best filmmakers' works at Asia's largest film stage. This year, the country will present two feature films, one short film, two co-productions, one film project, 16 platform participants, and seven producer hub participants. The five Indonesian films scheduled to screen at BIFF are "Tale of the Land," "Crocodile Tears," "Suintrah," "Don't Cry," and "Butterfly."
One rising star who captured attention at the opening event is Shenina Cinnamon. Dressed in a stunning gown by renowned designer Hian Tjen, she dazzled on the red carpet, sporting a sleeveless brown dress complemented by a simple yet elegant necklace and a neat hairstyle. Her presence alongside the team from "Tale of the Land," which is set for its world premiere, adds to Indonesia's pride on the international film stage.
The Busan International Film Festival 2024 is not only a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work but also a bridge for building connections among film industries from various countries. With its engaging programs and diverse film selections, BIFF 2024 stands out as the most anticipated film festival in Asia. The hope is that through this festival, the film industry can continue to thrive, create inspiring works, and enhance the nation's reputation on the global stage.
