NATIONAL KEBAYA DAY: PRESERVING INDONESIA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE

Honoring Tradition with Grace, Celebrating the Timeless Elegance and Unity

Indonesia celebrated National Kebaya Day for the first time on July 24, 2024, marking a significant milestone in its history. This event was formally recognized through Presidential Decree No. 19 of 2023, signed on August 4, 2023. The establishment of this day aimed to honor kebaya as a vital part of the national identity. Furthermore, kebaya was not just a cultural symbol; it also played a crucial role in supporting the local economy by benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and textile artisans.

History and Significance of National Kebaya Day

The decree highlights several important reasons for designating July 24 as National Kebaya Day. First, kebaya is seen as a national identity that unifies the nation, transcending various ethnicities and cultures. It has evolved into a highly valuable cultural asset, necessitating its protection and preservation. Second, kebaya is used nationally in various activities, both at the national and international levels. Third, at the 10th Indonesian Women’s Congress attended by President Soekarno, it was declared that the Indonesian revolution could not proceed without the involvement of women, where all attendees wore kebaya.

National Kebaya Day Celebration 2024

The 2024 celebration of National Kebaya Day was filled with exciting and meaningful events. Around 7,000 participants attended, all dressed in various types of kebaya, adding to the festivity and beauty of the occasion. Accompanying the President at this event was Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung. The President arrived wearing a brown batik, while Mrs. Iriana looked elegant in a blue kebaya.

The celebration featured various renowned performers, such as fashion designer Anne Avantie, singers Sundari Sukoco, Putri Ariani, and actress Widyawati. Additionally, five famous singers—Rika Roeslan, Yuni Shara, Iga Mawarni, Nina Tamam, and Andien—performed a song titled 'Kebaya Indonesia,' which strengthened the spirit of pride and love for kebaya.

Theme and Aspirations

This year’s National Kebaya Day theme is “Preserve Culture with Pride in Wearing Kebaya.” This theme reflects the hope that all Indonesians will increasingly love and be proud to wear kebaya, and commit to preserving this cultural heritage. Kebaya is not only traditional clothing but also a symbol of unity, diversity, and national identity that must be protected and passed down to future generations.

National Kebaya Day is a significant moment to celebrate Indonesia's cultural wealth and strengthen the sense of pride in national identity. This commemoration aims to raise public awareness about the importance of preserving kebaya and supporting artisans and MSMEs in the industry. Kebaya is not just a piece of clothing; it is a reflection of Indonesia's history, struggle, and cultural beauty that we should be proud of and preserve.
