REVIVING HERITAGE: SEMARAPURA FESTIVAL 2025 ILLUMINATES KLUNGKUNG’S CULTURAL SPIRIT AND CREATIVE ENERGY
A dazzling showcase of tradition and innovation, bringing generations together in a vibrant celebration
Semarapura Festival 2025 returns as an annual cultural event that reinforces Klungkung’s identity as a region rich in art, history, and local innovation. Taking place from April 28 to May 1, 2025, at Klungkung City Park, the festival is part of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) program, which consistently promotes local potential through collaboration among artists, MSMEs, and the community.
Embracing the spirit of cultural preservation, the festival is rooted in the commemoration of the 1908 Puputan Klungkung War—a heroic event in which King Dewa Agung Jambe II and his people chose to fight to the end against Dutch colonial forces. This historical moment is brought to life through theatrical performances, interactive exhibitions, and storytelling sessions that offer profound educational insights into the values of resistance and the enduring identity of Bali.
Serving as a celebration of art in a historical setting, the Semarapura Festival will feature a diverse range of activities, including the Baris Jangkang dance performance from Budaga Village, contemporary dance showcases from various art studios and consular representatives, as well as Balinese music and creative economy performances at Semarapura’s city center.
The festival will also present the Pesinggahan Culinary Show, featuring signature dishes such as sate and pepes, along with exhibitions of local MSMEs and traditional crafts.
Recognized as a weaving hub, Klungkung will highlight the beauty of its traditional textiles through a fashion show by local designers. The entire event embraces environmentally friendly principles, including the reduction of single-use plastics and the use of locally sourced materials. As a form of recognition, awards will be presented to outstanding artisans and participants.
Designed to deliver an authentic experience, the festival aims to promote sustainable tourism, strengthen the MSME sector, and boost visits from both domestic and international tourists. Through strong branding strategies and digital promotion, the Semarapura Festival is expected to stand as a cultural icon representing Klungkung on the global stage.
