ITS ANTONIO MARCEGLIA FRIGATE DOCKS IN JAKARTA: A MILESTONE IN ITALY-INDONESIA DEFENSE DIPLOMACY

Symbolizing strategic ties and a shared maritime vision, marking a key chapter in naval cooperation

The Italian Navy warship ITS Antonio Marceglia (F 597) docked at Pier 107, Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta, from May 13 to 16, 2025. This visit was part of a goodwill mission and a strategic cooperation initiative by the Italian Navy in the Indo-Pacific region, following the ship’s participation in the 2025 Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK) held in the waters off Bali.

The arrival of the advanced frigate underscored Italy’s efforts to strengthen bilateral defense relations with Indonesia while contributing to regional maritime security and stability. ITS Antonio Marceglia, renowned for its cutting-edge defense systems, served as a clear symbol of Italy’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial maritime collaboration.

On the evening of Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Ambassador of Italy to Indonesia, Hon. Roberto Colaminè, together with the ship’s Commanding Officer, CDR Alberto Bartolomeo, hosted an official reception on board. The event was attended by distinguished guests from various institutions, including Mujizat Alam, Head of the Jakarta Office of PT PAL Indonesia and founder of National Ocean, as well as Siswanto Rusdi, Founder and Director of The National Maritime Institute (NAMARIN).

In an atmosphere of diplomatic warmth, invited guests had the opportunity to tour the ship and attend a presentation showcasing its advanced weapon systems and naval technology. This event provided a firsthand view of Italy’s defense capabilities and served as a platform for dialogue between maritime and defense institutions from both countries.

The presence of ITS Antonio Marceglia in Jakarta was also part of Italy’s broader defense diplomacy strategy in the Indo-Pacific. Through this engagement, Italy affirmed its commitment to supporting capacity-building efforts among regional partners and strengthening solidarity in ensuring shared maritime security.

With the conclusion of this visit, it is hoped that maritime and defense cooperation between Italy and Indonesia will continue to grow, fostering a resilient partnership amid the increasingly complex dynamics of the region.
