Inviting the public to explore cultural journeys and stories through comics that reveal rich meaning and harmonious depth

Celebrated French comic artist Joël Alessandra is currently in Indonesia to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations between France and Indonesia. His visit is part of a special program organized by the Institut français d'Indonésie (IFI), presenting a series of creative events in Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, and Denpasar.

For Alessandra, this trip is more than an artistic endeavor, it is also a return to familiar ground. In 2014, he took part in an art residency program in Indonesia alongside three other French comic artists. That experience led to the creation of the book Kompilasi Komikus: Carnet de Résidences en Indonésie, published by French independent publisher La Boîte à Bulles. The book showcases a rich cultural exchange between the two nations and offers an insightful, nuanced view of Indonesia’s diversity through the lens of graphic storytelling.

Known for his multidisciplinary approach, Joël Alessandra skillfully blends illustration, narrative, and memory in his work. He often delves into themes of place, identity, and the transmission of meaning. His drawings capture the spirit of his travels and present a poetic, reflective take on the world around him.

Running through June 22, 2025, the ongoing tour invites the Indonesian public to engage with Alessandra’s creative universe through exhibitions, artist talks, and workshops. The journey began in Jakarta with a public discussion at the Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ), followed by the opening of the Graphic Memoir exhibition at Bentara Budaya Jakarta. In each city, visitors can explore his sketches, travel stories, and personal reflections brought to life through his art.

The tour will conclude in Denpasar as part of the Bali Arts Festival (PKB), held at Museum Pasifika. This closing event promises a festive celebration of the artistic connection between France and Indonesia, highlighting shared creativity and cultural appreciation.

Joël Alessandra’s presence in Indonesia offers a unique chance to view the country from the perspective of an international artist, while also honoring the enduring cultural dialogue that has grown over the past 75 years. It is a meaningful encounter that both entertains and inspires.
