INNER SIGHT AT GALERI ZEN1 JAKARTA AN ART EXHIBITION BY RB ALI EXPLORING REFLECTION AND VISUAL TRANSFORMATION
A compelling showcase that invites audiences to navigate emotion, symbolism, and introspection through layered contemporary artworks
Soft light glides across canvases filled with deformed figures. Their forms are indistinct yet evocative, suggesting images of fish, cats, elephants, and lizards. Around them, handwritten words, mathematical formulas, and illustrations of the snakes and ladders game are scattered across the surface, adding layered meanings to the composition. The painting titled Angeli stands out as one of the highlights of RB Ali’s Inner Sight exhibition at Galeri Zen1 in Jakarta.
On view until March 10, 2026, the exhibition traces RB Ali’s creative journey over the past four years. Once recognized for his more conventional realist approach, Ali now presents a freer and more exploratory visual direction. Inner Sight serves as a space where the artist reveals his inner process, reflecting on moments of falling, rethinking, rising again, and ultimately coming to terms with himself.
At first glance, the works appear to blend surrealism and abstraction. Literal and imaginative elements intertwine on the canvas, forming a harmony that feels both contrasting and cohesive. Familiar figures are intentionally detached from their original forms, allowing viewers to reinterpret the meanings behind them. This approach reflects Ali’s willingness to move beyond the boundaries of a single artistic style.
RB Ali has never limited himself to one movement. Throughout his career, he has explored realism, cubism, abstraction, and surrealism. In this latest phase, these visual languages merge into a more fluid and personal expression. Text and numbers appear alongside painted figures, while poems are written directly onto the canvas. Symbols from games such as snakes and ladders subtly suggest the unpredictable rises and falls of life.
This sense of reflection is particularly evident in works such as Lelah dalam Ketidakpastian 2023 and The Lucky 2026. Created with acrylic on canvas, these pieces combine everyday objects with unusual figures, portraying a reality that does not always follow a straight path. In Capek Boleh, Menyerah Jangan, a seemingly fragile figure remains standing. Bold contrasting colors heighten the tension while conveying resilience. The painting captures both exhaustion and the determination to keep moving forward.
In contrast, Terjeda presents a quieter and more contemplative mood. The composition includes a house, an outstretched hand, and a figure walking along a narrow bridge. Numbers positioned before the figure suggest measured steps and life choices. Through this work, Ali creates a pause, inviting viewers to reflect and listen to their inner thoughts.
Inner Sight offers more than a visual presentation. The exhibition encourages personal reflection, reminding us that the loudest noise often comes not from the outside world but from within ourselves. Through layered figures, text, and symbols, RB Ali opens a dialogue about the different phases of life that each person may be navigating.
Visiting this exhibition is not simply about observing paintings. It is about confronting a version of oneself that may have been overlooked or avoided. Inner Sight becomes a mirror of the inner world, where art and personal experience meet in a space of quiet contemplation.
