A captivating journey into a poetic fusion where trees speak in brushstrokes

Balinese artist Nyoman Sujana Kenyem presents his latest works in a solo exhibition titled I Am a Tree, currently on view at Zen1 Gallery in Menteng, Central Jakarta. Running from May 26 to June 20, 2025, the exhibition features dozens of paintings centered on the theme of trees—serving as the heart of Kenyem’s artistic and spiritual exploration.

Through this series, Kenyem reflects on the deeper meanings of trees and their profound connection to human life and the universe. His paintings highlight hybrid figures—part human, part tree—that symbolize the interdependence between people and nature. These forms echo the spiritual and cultural beliefs of the Balinese community, which holds nature in high reverence as a vital part of existence.

Born in Sayan, Ubud, on September 9, 1972, Kenyem studied fine arts at ISI Denpasar (now ISI Bali). Since the 1990s, he has been active in the art scene both in Indonesia and internationally, known for consistently exploring themes related to nature, spirituality, and cultural identity.

The exhibition was officially opened on Monday, May 26, 2025, by actor and yoga instructor Anjasmara Prasetya. The opening was also attended by Zen1 Gallery owner Nicolaus Kuswanto and curator Arif Bagus Prasetyo.

In Balinese culture, trees carry profound spiritual meaning. They are often seen as sacred dwellings for spirits, symbols of strength, and manifestations of divine energy. During the Tumpek Wariga ceremony, the Balinese Hindu community pays special tribute to trees, honoring them as sacred elements of life.

In I Am a Tree, Kenyem offers not only a visually rich and poetic experience but also presents strong symbolic narratives. His dynamic visual style, shifting between symbolism and abstraction, enhances the visitor’s understanding of the deep bond between humans and the natural world.

The exhibition is open to the public daily from 9 AM to 8 PM at Zen1 Gallery, located at Jl. Purworejo No. 24, Dukuh Atas, Menteng, Central Jakarta. Through this body of work, Kenyem invites visitors to reconsider the relationship between humanity and nature from both an artistic and spiritual lens.
