BRINGING THE MARVELS OF ITALIAN CINEMA: HIGHLIGHTS OF ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2024
A mesmerizing celebration of culture and artistry
From April 24th to 28th, 2024, Jakarta and Bandung were immersed in the grandeur of the Italian Film Festival 2024: Venice in Jakarta. Five captivating Italian films graced the silver screen, enchanting Indonesian audiences with their beauty and compelling narratives. This event transcended the ordinary film festival, serving as a vibrant celebration of art and culture that connected two countries separated by geography but united in their appreciation of cinematic splendor.
The third edition of ITAFF in Jakarta and Bandung witnessed an extraordinary level of enthusiasm from the community for Italian cinema. Maria Battaglia, the Festival Director and Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Jakarta, proudly emphasized that this event not only showcased the finest Italian films but also fostered stronger collaborations with esteemed Italian institutions such as the Venice International Film Festival, laying the groundwork for ITAFF 2025.
Among the festival's highlights was the screening of the timeless Italian classic, "Bellissima," directed by the legendary Luchino Visconti. This screening served as a heartfelt tribute to Anna Magnani, who was honored with the Best Actress award by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists in 1952. With the support of CSC-Cineteca Nazionale, Indonesian audiences were treated to a rare opportunity to experience "Bellissima" in stunning 4K restoration format, delivering an enthralling cinematic journey.
"Bellissima" transcends being merely a film; it serves as a poignant reflection of the resilience of women in the film industry and Italian society during the 1950s. The story of a mother's relentless pursuit to make her child a star resonates as an inspiration, illustrating the transformative power of film as a catalyst for empowerment and societal change.
An integral aspect of the Italian Film Festival's allure is the chance to immerse oneself in the wonders of the Italian language and culture. Marissa Anita, recipient of the Best Supporting Actress Citra Award at the 2021 Indonesian Film Festival, expressed her joy in participating in the festival. For her, this event is not just an opportunity to enjoy the finest Italian films but also a nostalgic journey to rekindle her love for the Italian language and culture, which she cultivated two decades ago at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Jakarta.
Italian Film Festival 2024: Venice in Jakarta transcends being a mere event; it stands as a jubilant celebration of the beauty and potency of Italian cinema. From cutting-edge modern films to timeless classics, this festival has reignited the allure and enchantment of Italian cinema within the Indonesian community.
