WELCOMING LUNAR NEW YEAR 2026, GREBEG SUDIRO BRINGS NEW ENERGY TO PASAR GEDE, SOLO
Inviting the community to enjoy meaningful traditions in a warm, lively atmosphere, brought to life through diverse customs and engaging performances
Grebeg Sudiro is an annual cultural festival that has long been anticipated and is widely recognized as one of Solo’s key tourist attractions. Unlike many cultural events that highlight a single tradition, Grebeg Sudiro celebrates a harmonious blend of Javanese and Chinese cultures. This unique combination has established the festival as an iconic event, especially in the period leading up to Lunar New Year.
The festival was initiated by members of the Javanese and Chinese communities living in Sudiroprajan, Solo, Central Java. It was first held in 2007 to commemorate the anniversary of Pasar Gede Hardjonagoro. Over the years, Grebeg Sudiro has grown into a city wide cultural celebration that reflects strong values of togetherness and interethnic harmony.
Taking place in the heritage area of Pasar Gede and Solo Chinatown, Grebeg Sudiro creates a lively atmosphere through cultural parades, artistic performances, and the presentation of a mountain of sticky rice cakes, which has become one of the festival’s most recognizable symbols. Thousands of lanterns in red and gold decorate the area, creating a warm and festive Lunar New Year ambiance. The traditional trading activities at Pasar Gede further enliven the surroundings, attracting both locals and tourists.
In 2026, Grebeg Sudiro returns with a more inclusive approach. A variety of cross cultural activities, culinary events, and creative economy programs are designed to encourage public participation, allowing visitors to take part rather than simply observe. Each year, the festival introduces a new theme that reinforces the message of unity in diversity.
Support from the Solo City Government has continued to grow, particularly after Grebeg Sudiro was officially included in the Karisma Event Nusantara program by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia. This recognition highlights the festival’s role as one of the country’s important cultural tourism events.
The Grebeg Sudiro 2026 series will take place from 5 to 21 February 2026, with main activities centered around Pasar Gede, Sudiroprajan, and Solo City Hall. One of the featured attractions is the decorated boat tour along the Pepe River. Adorned with Lunar New Year ornaments, the boats will operate from 6 to 21 February 2026 starting at 5:00 PM local time. Each trip lasts around fifteen minutes, with ticket prices estimated between ten thousand and fifteen thousand rupiah per person for a one way journey.
Visitors can also enjoy the Cultural Fusion Culinary Festival in the Ketandan area from 6 to 17 February 2026, offering a wide selection of traditional snacks and popular dishes. In addition, the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Bazaar and Creative Showdratari performances at Solo City Hall from 10 to 16 February 2026 will feature local products and artistic shows that reflect the融合 of Javanese and Chinese cultures.
The highlight of Grebeg Sudiro is the Cultural Carnival, scheduled for Sunday, 15 February 2026, starting at 1:00 PM in the Pasar Gede area. Featuring art communities from Solo and surrounding regions, the carnival will bring the Grebeg Sudiro celebrations to a vibrant and memorable close. Through its rich program and strong cultural values, Grebeg Sudiro 2026 offers a meaningful opportunity to experience the harmony of Javanese and Chinese cultures in the warm and colorful spirit of Lunar New Year in Solo.
