Candi Sambisari, located in Sleman, Yogyakarta, is a remarkable temple that showcases stunning Hindu architecture and holds significant historical value. It was discovered by accident in 1966 when a farmer was working on his land. The temple had been buried around six meters underground due to the massive eruption of Mount Merapi in the 11th century.

This temple is more than just a structure; it is a complex that blends various elements of Hindu architecture, rich with historical meaning. Surrounded by a sturdy white stone wall, the temple complex exudes a majestic and sacred atmosphere. Each side of the wall features entrances, allowing visitors to easily explore the area. Although the northern entrance is currently closed, eight semi-lingga sculptures are placed at the four corners of the wall, creating a deep spiritual ambiance.

The temple’s surroundings include a wide terrace with stairs that provide easy access to different parts of the complex. Additionally, a second wall, partially visible, enhances the architectural structure of the temple, mainly observable on the eastern side.

Visitors to Candi Sambisari can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere, especially at sunrise. Many choose to arrive before dawn to witness the breathtaking sunrise, even though the main gate may still be closed. The view can still be enjoyed from outside the wall.

Candi Sambisari is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00, giving visitors the chance to appreciate its beauty and tranquility throughout the day. With an entrance fee of only Rp5,000, it offers an affordable and accessible experience.

While not as large as Candi Borobudur, the evening ambiance at Candi Sambisari is equally captivating. The twilight sky provides a beautiful backdrop, making the site just as enchanting. The sound of bells ringing before closing marks the end of the day and adds to the serene atmosphere. For those visiting with loved ones, the sunset at Candi Sambisari promises to be an unforgettable experience.
