KEBAYA RECOGNIZED BY UNESCO: A SYMBOL OF ELEGANCE AND PHILOSOPHY OF INDONESIAN WOMEN
Indonesia's elegant heritage combines traditional beauty with the timeless richness of art
Kebaya, the traditional attire of Indonesia, has officially been included in UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This decision was announced during the 19th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) held in Asuncion, Paraguay, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. This recognition marks a significant milestone in preserving kebaya as a vital part of Indonesia's cultural identity.
According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology's website, kebaya is a traditional upper garment for women typically paired with a long cloth or sarong as the lower garment. This traditional attire carries profound philosophical meaning in every element of its design. When the kebaya is matched with a similarly colored lower cloth, it is referred to as kebaya pasere. The kebaya fabric is often adorned with small floral patterns rather than large ones, symbolizing the beauty and grace inherent in Indonesian culture.
Kebaya is commonly worn during various formal occasions, such as childbirth ceremonies, weddings, and even mourning events. Its presence in such celebrations and rituals reflects the community's respect for traditions and the noble values upheld by Indonesian society.
According to Indonesia Baik.id, every element of the kebaya represents a deep meaning about the persona of Indonesian women. Its simple design, combined with the traditional jarik or long cloth as the lower garment, symbolizes the gentle and delicate nature characteristic of Indonesian women. The tight wrap of the cloth around the body emphasizes a sense of softness and refinement, reflecting the expectation that women should carry themselves with grace, speak softly, and act with elegance.
The kebaya's tailored fit that contours the body also holds philosophical meaning, representing a woman's ability to adapt to circumstances and her independence. Furthermore, the stagen or waist sash that wraps tightly around the body symbolizes patience, as the Javanese philosophy links it to the concept of long intestines, signifying high tolerance and endurance in life.
UNESCO's recognition of kebaya as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity not only honors kebaya as a traditional garment but also reinforces the cultural values embedded within it. Kebaya, with its deep philosophy and profound symbolism, remains a proud representation of Indonesian heritage and the elegance of its women.
