Paper may seem simple and ordinary, yet in The Paper Menagerie exhibition at ISA Art Gallery, it transforms into a powerful medium that captures human emotions, memories, and history. Inspired by Ken Liu’s short story of the same name, this exhibition explores how paper—through its folds, textures, and fragility—serves as a vessel for personal and collective narratives. The exhibition runs from February 27 to April 4, 2025.

Bringing together 29 artists from diverse backgrounds, The Paper Menagerie showcases the creative potential of paper as an artistic medium. From traditional craftsmanship to experimental techniques, each work highlights paper’s ability to preserve and express stories in unique ways.

In Southeast Asia, traditional paper like daluang from Java and saa paper from Thailand has long been used for religious texts, administrative records, and artistic creations. This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of paper—from a simple writing surface to a profound medium that encapsulates emotions and identities.

The artworks in The Paper Menagerie reveal the dual nature of paper: delicate and fragile, yet strong and enduring.
