THE PAPER MENAGERIE EXHIBITION: UNFOLDING MEMORY AND IDENTITY
An artistic exploration of how paper captures memory, identity, and history in a mesmerizing display
Paper may seem simple and ordinary, yet in The Paper Menagerie exhibition at ISA Art Gallery, it transforms into a powerful medium that captures human emotions, memories, and history. Inspired by Ken Liu’s short story of the same name, this exhibition explores how paper—through its folds, textures, and fragility—serves as a vessel for personal and collective narratives. The exhibition runs from February 27 to April 4, 2025.
Bringing together 29 artists from diverse backgrounds, The Paper Menagerie showcases the creative potential of paper as an artistic medium. From traditional craftsmanship to experimental techniques, each work highlights paper’s ability to preserve and express stories in unique ways.
Paper as a Medium of Art and Memory
Throughout history, paper has played a vital role in both artistic expression and documentation. In Southeast Asia, traditional paper like daluang from Java and saa paper from Thailand has long been used for religious texts, administrative records, and artistic creations. This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of paper—from a simple writing surface to a profound medium that encapsulates emotions and identities.
The artworks in The Paper Menagerie reveal the dual nature of paper: delicate and fragile, yet strong and enduring. Like the origami in Ken Liu’s story, which preserves memories and the emotional bond between a mother and child, these artworks illustrate how memory can be woven into the very fibers of paper. Paper, in this context, becomes an archive of life, recording both personal and shared histories.
Through its thought-provoking pieces, The Paper Menagerie invites visitors to reflect on the significance of paper—not just as a medium for artistic expression but as a silent witness to history, heritage, and identity. Whether in the form of daily notes, personal letters, or evocative artworks, paper holds traces of life’s journey.
This exhibition offers more than just a visual experience; it is an emotional and intellectual exploration of the power of paper. It encourages us to rediscover its role in everyday life, celebrate its ability to connect us with the past, and appreciate how every fold, crease, and mark tells a story waiting to be uncovered.
