EXPLORING OLAFUR ELIASSON’S WORLD OF COLOR AND LIGHT AT MUSEUM MACAN

A mesmerizing artistic voyage that transforms light and color into moments of pure wonder and emotional reflection

Museum MACAN in West Jakarta presents another world-class exhibition with the arrival of works by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. For the first time, Eliasson brings a selection of his major pieces to Indonesia through the exhibition titled Olafur Eliasson: Your Curious Journey, which opened on November 29, 2025, and runs until April 12, 2026. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the relationship between humans and nature through the interplay of color, light, and natural phenomena transformed into immersive installations.

Eliasson is known for exploring natural elements such as light, water, fog, and even invisible forces like magnetism. In Your Curious Journey, his works are arranged to encourage visitors to pause from the fast pace of daily life and reconnect with themselves. Each room offers an atmosphere that feels alive, shaped by shifting forms, shadows, sensations, and rhythms that respond to visitors’ movement and presence.

The exhibition traces Eliasson’s artistic journey, including several exclusive works shown only in Jakarta. These additions broaden the interpretation of the exhibition and provide new perspectives for the Indonesian edition. Through various compositions of color, lines, and light, visitors are invited to see the world with greater sensitivity and an openness to uncertainties that spark curiosity.

One of the featured works, Beauty (1993), presents a poetic installation of fine mist falling like a delicate curtain under a precisely positioned beam of light. Through the meeting of water and light, a rainbow spectrum emerges, shifting with each visitor’s steps and viewing angle. This moment of beauty appears only when approached closely, offering a quiet, contemplative experience.

Another highlight is Multiple Shadow House (2010), an installation composed of three rooms illuminated by halogen lights in three different color perspectives. These light sources cast layered shadows of each visitor, creating dynamic silhouettes that make human presence an essential part of the artwork. As visitors move, the installation continuously transforms, resulting in a personal experience that is unique to everyone.

While rich in meaning and reflection for adults, the exhibition also draws the attention of children who joyfully interact with the lights and colors. This demonstrates Eliasson’s ability to engage audiences of all ages through intuitive and visually captivating approaches.

As part of its Asia-Pacific tour, the exhibition was previously showcased at the Singapore Art Museum, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, and Taipei Fine Arts Museum before reaching Museum MACAN. After Jakarta, it will continue to the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Manila. With its arrival in Indonesia, Your Curious Journey offers a rare opportunity to experience international contemporary art that encourages viewers to see the world with renewed awareness.
