COMMEMORATION OF INDONESIA'S 79TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY: A HISTORIC MILESTONE TOWARDS A NEW NUSANTARA
Embarking on a journey to forge a brighter and more progressive Indonesia
The 79th Anniversary of Indonesia's Independence in 2024 is a momentous occasion filled with significance. Under the grand theme "New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia," this year's celebration marks two pivotal transitions for the nation: the relocation of the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, East Kalimantan, and the leadership shift from President Joko Widodo to Prabowo Subianto, who will be inaugurated this October.
For the first time in history, Indonesia's Independence Day is being celebrated in the new capital, Nusantara (IKN), symbolizing the country's commitment to a new era. The Proclamation Ceremony, held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, took place simultaneously in two locations: IKN Nusantara and Jakarta, with the ceremonies scheduled for 11:00 AM WITA in IKN and 10:00 AM WIB in Jakarta.
In IKN Nusantara, President Joko Widodo led the ceremony at the Garuda Palace, donning traditional attire from the Sultanate of Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadipura. He was seated alongside the Minister of Defense and President-elect for the 2024-2029 term, Prabowo Subianto. Their presence sent a powerful message of continuity and stability in leadership, underscoring the nation's commitment to progress.
Prior to the main ceremony, a vibrant cultural performance took place at the State Palace Courtyard in IKN, showcasing the rich diversity of Nusantara's culture—one of the nation's core strengths. The event also featured a parade of the Duplicate National Flag and a replica of the Proclamation Text, a tradition that honors the heroic spirit of those who fought for independence.
Meanwhile, in Jakarta, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin led the ceremony at Merdeka Palace. Despite the gradual shift of the government center to IKN, Jakarta remains a vital part of the nation's history and participated enthusiastically in the independence celebrations. Similar to IKN, the ceremony in Jakarta was preceded by cultural performances at the Merdeka Palace Courtyard.
The day's events spanned from midnight to evening, beginning with the Honorary Ceremony and Sacred Reflection at Kusuma Bangsa Park in IKN and the National Heroes Cemetery (TMPNU) Kalibata in Jakarta. The celebrations continued with various artistic performances and concluded with the National Flag Lowering Ceremony in the evening.
The 79th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence is more than just an annual event; it is a reaffirmation that Indonesia is advancing towards a brighter future. The relocation of the capital to Nusantara and the seamless leadership transition showcase the nation's readiness to tackle global challenges. The enduring spirit of independence, nurtured over 79 years, continues to inspire all Indonesians to unite in building the New Nusantara and achieving the vision of an Advanced Indonesia.
