CHILDREN SPEAK THROUGH ART: COURAGE AND DREAMS AT THE “TUMBUH TANPA TAKUT” EXHIBITION
A vibrant space where children's creations embody courage, hope, and a passionate spirit to shape a better world
Kids Biennale Indonesia returns for its third edition with renewed spirit and a deeper purpose. This year’s exhibition of art by children and youth adopts the theme "Grow Without Fear" as a response to the serious challenges many young people face today, including sexual violence, bullying, and intolerance. The exhibition was officially opened on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the National Gallery of Indonesia in Central Jakarta and will run through July 31.
Over a two-month submission period, the organizers received 1,026 artworks from children and teens across Indonesia. After a thorough curation process, 142 pieces were selected for display in Halls B and D of the National Gallery. In addition, artworks that were not selected for the main exhibition are still presented digitally for participants from the Greater Jakarta area.
The exhibited works reflect a wide range of backgrounds, including students from elementary to high school, children from formal education systems, art communities in remote areas, homeschoolers, and children with special needs from inclusive schools. The exhibition welcomes participants aged 6 to 17, and for children with special needs, up to 22 years old. This makes Kids Biennale the first inclusive art biennale in Indonesia dedicated specifically to children and youth.
According to the curatorial note, children are the seeds of the future, yet their growth is often hindered by violence and discrimination. The three main issues highlighted—sexual violence, bullying, and intolerance—can deeply impact a child's sense of safety and limit their ability to dream, create, and grow with confidence. With the theme "Grow Without Fear," Kids Biennale aims to offer a space for healing, empowerment, and solidarity, while encouraging collaboration among various communities to build a more supportive world for children.
This year’s event also features the participation of three guest artists: Re-Exp from Bandung, Nuki Alwi from Banda Neira, and Darren Chandra from Bogor. Their involvement brings added depth to the artistic experience and creates a meaningful bridge between young creators and the professional art scene.
More than just an art exhibition, Kids Biennale Indonesia 2025 is a vibrant, inclusive, and educational platform. It celebrates the right of every child to grow in courage, creativity, and hope—free from fear and full of possibility.
