CELEBRATION OF SPAIN'S NATIONAL DAY IN JAKARTA: A STRENGTHENING OF BILATERAL RELATIONS
Weaving together culture and history symbolizes the close friendship between the two nations in the spirit of strong collaboration
Spain's National Day, celebrated annually on October 12, commemorates the historic arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Also known as Día de la Hispanidad, this day is not only observed in Spain but also in countries with strong diplomatic ties, including Indonesia.
In Jakarta, the 2024 celebration took place on Thursday, October 10, with a grand reception hosted by the Spanish Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Francisco de Asís Aguilera Aranda, at the Gran Meliá Hotel. The event was attended by over 1,000 guests, including key figures from both the Indonesian and Spanish governments.
The official dress code for the evening, featuring batik, lounge suits, or uniforms, highlighted the cultural beauty and traditions of both nations. This fusion of cultural elements created a warm and friendly atmosphere, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between the two countries.
One of the notable guests was Indonesia's Minister of Planning, Suharso Monoarfa. In his remarks alongside the Spanish Ambassador, he underscored the significance of the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Spain. Both dignitaries emphasized the long-standing cooperation between the nations, particularly in the sectors of trade, investment, and education.
Other prominent attendees included Indonesia’s Minister of Investment, Rosan Roeslani, and the Chairman of the House of Regional Representatives (DPD), Sultan B. Najamudin, who were joined by several leaders from the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSP) of the DPD RI. Their presence signaled the commitment of both countries to continue strengthening bilateral relations. The BKSP leaders accompanying Sultan B. Najamudin—Gusti Farid Hasan Aman, Darmansyah Husein, Mirah Midadan Fahmid, and Lis Tabuni—stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation, noting that Spain’s bicameral parliamentary system mirrors that of Indonesia.
Inter-parliamentary collaboration is viewed as essential to advancing various aspects of the bilateral relationship, especially in fostering policy-making that supports increased investment and trade between the two nations. During the event, Sultan B. Najamudin expressed his hope that ties between the two parliaments would grow closer, creating more opportunities for collaboration across different sectors.
Spain's National Day is not only a celebration of the country's rich history and culture but also a valuable occasion to deepen friendships with other nations. The event in Jakarta was marked by a strong sense of national pride, showcasing Spain's vibrant culture to the world. Guests experienced the warmth of Spanish diplomacy, which remains dedicated to fostering positive relations with Indonesia.
The celebration provided an excellent platform to strengthen cooperation in various fields, especially through parliamentary relations, investment, and trade. As bilateral ties grow stronger, both countries look forward to continuing their mutual support in building a better future together.
