CELEBRATING CYPRUS NATIONAL DAY: A GAMELAN CONCERT AND CULTURAL COLLABORATION IN JAKARTA
Bringing cultures together in a mesmerizing tribute to 64 years of Cyprus independence
On October 1, 2024, the Republic of Cyprus commemorated its 64th year of independence from Britain. To honor this significant milestone, the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Indonesia hosted a special Gamelan Concert in Jakarta. Held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Usmar Ismail Hall on Jalan HR. Rasuna Said, the event attracted a distinguished crowd of diplomats, artists, and guests. This celebration not only marked Cyprus's independence but also showcased a vibrant cultural exchange between Cyprus and Indonesia.
H.E. Mr. Nikos Panayiotou, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Indonesia and ASEAN, emphasized the importance of this occasion. He stated, "After achieving independence, the people of Cyprus were represented at the Bandung Conference of 1955, which laid the foundations for the non-aligned movement. Over the past year, we have worked diligently to establish our embassy and strengthen the ties between Cyprus and Indonesia. The prospects for cooperation in various fields are indeed promising."
The Ambassador further remarked, "The reunification of the people and country of Cyprus remains a top priority in our foreign policy." This commitment underscores Cyprus's dedication to fostering relationships not only within its own borders but also internationally, particularly with Indonesia.
In the past year, Cyprus has made significant strides in enhancing its diplomatic presence and deepening bonds with Indonesia. The Ambassador expressed his deep satisfaction with the promising outlook for cooperation across multiple areas, reaffirming the commitment to bring the two countries and their peoples closer together.
Following the celebration of Cyprus's independence, the two-hour concert provided the audience with a rare and captivating cultural experience. Contemporary Cypriot artist Andys Skordys, a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, collaborated with Jakarta’s Saraswati Gamelan group, led by renowned Balinese gamelan maestro I Gusti Kompyang Raka. This partnership created an extraordinary blend of contemporary Cypriot music with the traditional sounds of Balinese gamelan, further enhancing the ties between the two nations
The entire performance featured traditional Balinese musical instruments, symbolizing cross-cultural friendship. Skordys, who has studied Balinese music for several years in Indonesia, infused his contemporary style into the gamelan, resulting in a seamless fusion of two distinct cultures. The combination of gamelan with modern Cypriot composition techniques added layers of depth and richness, offering the audience an unforgettable musical journey.
More than just a celebration of Cyprus's independence, the concert served as a powerful example of cultural diplomacy. The formal setting saw guests dressed in business attire and batik, adding a unique local touch that further solidified the bond between the two nations.
After the concert, a warm reception welcomed guests, including diplomats, artists, and community leaders, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and cultural exchange. The event's success ignited hopes for future collaborations, highlighting the potential of art to build enduring bridges between nations.
As the night concluded, it became clear that events like this foster mutual understanding and friendship. Music and culture provide a way to celebrate diversity and establish common ground. This occasion serves as a reminder to support meaningful cultural collaborations that strengthen international relations between Indonesia and Cyprus, paving the way for a future filled with shared experiences and creative unity.
