BULELENG INTERNATIONAL RHYTHM FESTIVAL 2026 RETURNS, STRENGTHENING NORTH BALI’S ROLE IN GLOBAL CULTURAL DIPLOMACY

This arts festival creates a dynamic space where tradition, education, and collaboration come together in meaningful and inspiring ways

As modernization accelerates and the entertainment industry continues to grow, the need to preserve arts and culture becomes increasingly important. One meaningful response to this challenge is the Buleleng International Rhythm Festival BIRF, an event that promotes cultural exchange between local and international communities through traditional arts and world rhythms. In 2026, Buleleng Regency has once again been entrusted to host the festival for the third consecutive year, reinforcing North Bali’s growing reputation as a recognized cultural destination on the global stage.

BIRF 2026 will take place from March 10 to March 15, 2026. The main programs are scheduled for March 11 to March 14, with participants arriving on March 10 and departing on March 15. This year, the festival will bring together artists, cultural figures, and academics from six countries. Their presence is intended not only to present their respective cultural traditions, but also to encourage meaningful cross cultural dialogue through performances and academic discussions.

The festival is organized through a collaboration between UNESCO, IOV Indonesia, and Yayasan Sanggar Seni Santi Budaya as the main driving force in Bali. Over the past three editions, BIRF has also received support from the Government of Buleleng Regency and Puri Kangenan Buleleng. UNESCO’s recommendation for the 2025 to 2027 period reflects international recognition of Buleleng’s ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting traditional arts.

Academic involvement plays a significant role in the festival’s development. Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha Undiksha contributes to the organization of various programs, strengthening the educational and research dimensions of the event. This partnership with higher education institutions also creates opportunities for young people to participate actively in cultural preservation. In addition, cultural workshops will be held at several schools and campuses in Buleleng, including SMA Negeri 1 Singaraja, SMK Negeri 1 Sawan, SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja, PPLP Pansophia Singaraja, and LPK Kencana Hospitality Bali. These sessions provide direct interaction between international delegates and local students, fostering mutual learning and cultural understanding.

Beyond its cultural impact, BIRF 2026 also contributes to the local economy. Desa Wisata Panji and Desa Wisata Kalibukbuk are involved in the festival’s activities, including cultural introductions and dolphin watching tourism experiences. Local micro, small, and medium enterprises also take part, such as UMKM Desa Panji with its sorghum based products and UMKM Desa Tigawasa with its bamboo craft creations.

Through BIRF, Bali is expected to be known not only for its natural beauty but also for the resilience and continuity of its cultural heritage. The festival serves as an important platform to strengthen community confidence in preserving tradition while engaging with an increasingly connected world.
