NYALA: 200 YEARS OF THE DIPONEGORO WAR — AN ART EXHIBITION AWAKENING THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY
It is a powerful visual celebration igniting the spirit of resistance through cross-generational artworks
The art exhibition Nyala: 200 Years of the Diponegoro War is open to the public from July 22 to September 15, 2025, at the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta. This exhibition serves as a significant moment to reflect on Prince Diponegoro’s resistance against colonialism while honoring the role of artists in visually reconstructing history.
The event was officially inaugurated by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and attended by the Head of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, E. Aminudin Aziz. In his remarks, Fadli Zon emphasized that the exhibition seeks to convey the meaning of Diponegoro’s struggle through artistic and interdisciplinary perspectives. More than a historical tribute, Nyala presents a compelling and relevant narrative of resistance for today’s audience.
The exhibition features 33 works by 26 artists from various generations. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, installations, media art, and historical artifacts such as archives, manuscripts, coins, and books related to the Diponegoro War. Esteemed figures like Raden Saleh and Basoeki Abdullah, along with contemporary artists such as Jompet Kuswidananto, Irene Agrivina, and Ugo Untoro, contribute to the richness and depth of the showcase.
A central highlight is the iconic painting The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro (1857) by Raden Saleh. Positioned prominently in the main hall with special protection, the artwork immediately captures the attention of visitors. In this powerful piece, Saleh delivers a poignant critique of colonialism. His portrayal of Diponegoro as a dignified and defiant figure stands in stark contrast to Nicolaas Pieneman’s earlier depiction of the prince as defeated and submissive.
By choosing the title The Arrest, Saleh reinterprets the historical event not as a voluntary surrender, but as an act of betrayal and deception by Dutch colonial forces. The painting shows Diponegoro with a resolute expression and upright posture, visually asserting equality with General De Kock and symbolizing unyielding resistance and self-respect.
More than just an exhibition of historical art, Nyala invites visitors—especially younger generations—to explore the meaning of struggle and the power of visual art in shaping a nation's collective memory. With ticket prices set at Rp25,000 for children and Rp50,000 for adults, this exhibition is a cultural experience that should not be missed.
