MICAM NEXT IN MILAN PRESENTED A SERIES OF INNOVATION PROGRAMS AND DISCUSSIONS ON THE FUTURE OF THE FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY

A global forum where creativity, technology, and industry insight came together to explore the future of footwear

The international footwear exhibition MICAM was held once again in Milan through its 101st edition, which took place from February 22 to 24, 2026. The event reaffirmed its position as one of the leading references in the global footwear industry by presenting a wide range of programs that combined innovation, industry discussions, and the exploration of future trends. Through its comprehensive agenda, MICAM 101 served as a meeting point for industry players, ranging from brands and designers to international buyers.

One of the main programs that attracted attention was MICAM Next, a platform that explored the transformation of the footwear industry through technology, design, and sustainability. Curated by Wired Italia, the program featured a series of discussions, seminars, and presentations that examined key developments in the industry, from omnichannel strategies and e commerce to innovations in technology driven and sports footwear. Through this forum, participants gained new perspectives on market changes as well as the challenges the industry may face in the future.

The event officially opened on February 22 with the Opening Ceremony of MICAM 101 and MIPEL 129, bringing together several industry figures and representatives from important institutions. During the opening session, speakers highlighted the importance of collaboration between the education sector, industry, and government in supporting the future of the fashion and manufacturing sectors. The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Italian Ministry of Education, Confindustria Moda, and Confindustria Accessori Moda also marked an important step toward strengthening the skills of younger generations in the creative industry.

In addition to discussion forums, the program also featured a variety of trend presentations and fashion shows. The MICAM Fashion Show became one of the highlights, showcasing the latest footwear designs from various brands. Meanwhile, the Trends and Colours session presented by Livetrend provided insights into the direction of color and design developments for upcoming seasons. Four macro trends introduced in this edition were Bucolic Slumber, Lavish Subversion, Primal Futurism, and Dark History, all framed under the overarching theme Primordial Renaissance.

Pavilion 3 served as the center for various MICAM Next activities, including seminars on material innovation, performance technology for sports footwear, and the future of the retail industry. The Future of Retail area also introduced several technological solutions designed to support the transformation of retail stores in the digital era. Among the innovations presented were artificial intelligence technology for shoe size recommendations, a digital twin platform for ESG data management, and smartphone based visual content production systems.

Meanwhile, Pavilion 5 hosted M and M The Hub, a space focused on creativity, education, and the development of new talent. In this area, around 500 students from specialized footwear schools participated in a project to create shoe prototypes together with craftsmen from Arsutoria School. The program produced around 100 unique pairs of shoes that combined traditional approaches with modern technology, including the use of innovative materials and an NFC system that allowed the production process to be accessed digitally.

MICAM 101 also presented the Emerging Designers project, which featured twelve young brands from various countries. The selected designers showcased works with diverse approaches, ranging from the use of recycled materials to the exploration of cultural identity in footwear design.

Through this series of programs, MICAM 101 not only presented a product exhibition but also served as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas that reflected the dynamics of the global footwear industry. The event demonstrated how innovation, creativity, and collaboration continued to shape the future direction of the industry.
