KOMARONG: INDONESIA'S ANIMATION STEPS INTO THE WORLD STAGE

Komarong is Indonesia's animated series, built on Balinese mythology and produced by Infinite Studios Batam to global television standards. It premieres in late 2026.

On May 3, 2026, a trailer dropped on YouTube under the channel @komaronguniverse and the comments section filled with one recurring observation: this does not look like what Indonesian animation has looked like before.

The lighting. The texture. The character expressions. Each frame of Komarong reads at the level of international television animation, which is not a coincidence. The studio behind it has produced animation for Netflix, Disney, Nickelodeon, and Emmy-winning productions. This time, they are telling an Indonesian story.

Barong in Komarong. The character that anchors Balinese mythology now anchors an animated series built to reach the world.

What Komarong Is and Where It Comes From

Komarong is an animated series produced through a collaboration between Infinite Studios Batam, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, and Indonesiana TV, targeting a premiere in late 2026. The creative concept was developed by Ida Bagus Aditya Wardana and Gilang Bhagaskara, who previously presented the Komarong concept at the Asia TV Forum and Market 2025.

The story follows Komang and Barong as they work to protect Nusantara from a major threat. The conflict originates from an ancient battle between Barong and Kalageni, after which Barong loses his power and must recover its scattered fragments across historical sites throughout the archipelago. Characters including Komang, Barong, Celuluk, and Merta serve as cultural representations wrapped in a modern adventure format.

Komarong

Komang, not just a hero. A fire that rose from loss. Behind the smile, a story. Behind every step, a destiny still unfolding.

Episode titles like Cermin Waktu di Candi Muaro Jambi reveal the approach: real Indonesian historical sites embedded directly into the narrative as story locations, not backdrops. The geography of the archipelago becomes the map of the series.

Infinite Studios Batam is not a new player in international animation. Based in Batam with a team of over 300 people, the studio has worked on Netflix productions CoComelon Lane and Unicorn Academy, Emmy award-winning Peter Rabbit and Octonauts, Disney original series Vampirina Season 1, and Nickelodeon's Top Wing. That portfolio is why the visual quality of Komarong reads differently from most locally produced Indonesian animation.

Why Komarong Matters Beyond the Series Itself

Komarong is one of the intellectual properties born from the Akselerasi Kreatif program, known as AKTIF, initiated by the Ministry of Creative Economy. The program aims to develop local creative works that are not only strong conceptually but also commercially viable with export potential.

Three things define the ambition behind Komarong. First, technology transfer that strengthens Batam's position as a digital talent hub. Second, content sovereignty, proving that local creators can produce competitive intellectual property against the dominance of imported content. Third, character education delivered through animation without being didactic, remaining relevant and engaging for the target audience.

The Ministry of Culture described Komarong as part of Indonesia's cultural diplomacy strategy. Through animation, the values of Indonesian culture are positioned to reach closer to the current digital generation, not just as entertainment but as an enjoyable medium for cultural learning.

Komarong airs on Indonesiana TV, Monday to Wednesday at 9 AM WIB and Tuesday to Thursday at 11 AM and 5 PM WIB. The broadcast schedule is already running. The full production continues through 2026 toward the complete series premiere.

Public response to the teaser released in May 2026 showed consistently positive reception, with comments across platforms highlighting the quality of lighting, texture detail, and character expressions as already meeting the level of international television animation.

Indonesia has told its stories in batik, in wayang, in film, and in music. Komarong is the version built for the generation that watches Netflix. And it is being made by a studio that already knows how Netflix looks.
