On February 20, 2025, the Japan National Day Reception celebrating the 65th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito was held in grandeur at the St. Regis Jakarta. The prestigious event welcomed distinguished guests from various sectors, including high-ranking Indonesian government officials, diplomatic representatives, and prominent public figures.
Representing the Indonesian government, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono attended as a special envoy for the occasion. Several key ministers from President Prabowo Subianto’s cabinet were also present, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri, and Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Sultan Najamuddin.
Strengthening Indonesia-Japan Relations
The celebration was hosted by Japan’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, and Japan’s Ambassador to ASEAN, Kiya Masahiko. In his speech, Ambassador Masaki emphasized the deepening relationship between Indonesia and Japan, which continues to flourish across various sectors. He also shared his experiences from his first year of service in Indonesia, highlighting the country’s vibrant energy and rich cultural diversity.
As a testament to Japan’s commitment to Indonesia’s development, Ambassador Masaki reaffirmed his support for Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. “Additionally, Japan is also committed to enhancing food self-sufficiency through strengthened agriculture and fisheries, as well as promoting sustainable natural resource management,” he stated.
A Tribute to Cultural Bonds
During his speech, Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono expressed his admiration for Japanese culture, which has played a significant role in shaping the childhoods of many Indonesians. He fondly recalled the influence of beloved Japanese characters such as Doraemon, Ultraman, Godzilla, Captain Tsubasa, Dragon Ball, and Kamen Rider—icons that have left a lasting impression on Indonesian society.
Beyond diplomacy, Agus emphasized that the Indonesia-Japan relationship is built on a deep-rooted cultural connection that continues to strengthen over time.
A Vibrant Showcase of Japanese Arts and Cuisine
This year’s celebration began with an electrifying performance by Wadaiko Benten, a renowned Taiko drumming group that showcased the powerful rhythms of Japan’s traditional percussion art. The event reached a poignant moment when the national anthems of both nations—Japan’s Kimigayo and Indonesia’s Indonesia Raya—were performed by a Japanese choir that has been active in Jakarta since 2005.
Adding to the authentic atmosphere, the venue was beautifully adorned with Japanese cultural elements, including cherry blossoms, intricate calligraphy, and elegant paintings. Several Japanese companies also participated, presenting their latest innovations and flagship products.
Beyond the artistic displays, guests were treated to an exquisite selection of Japanese cuisine, which became one of the evening’s highlights. The menu featured a range of delicacies, including tempura, sushi, unagi, yakisoba, premium Japanese Wagyu beef, as well as sake and fine wines—elevating the overall experience of the event.
