CANADA NAMED THE SAFEST TRAVEL DESTINATION FOR 2024

Safety and natural beauty blend seamlessly, offering travelers a secure and unforgettable adventure

When planning a trip, safety is often at the forefront of travelers' minds. While factors like cost, distance, and available activities are important, security remains a critical consideration. To help travelers choose a safe destination, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has released its Safest Destinations report, highlighting the top places to visit in 2024 where safety is a priority. For travelers from the United States, the safest destination is surprisingly close to home—Canada.

For the past nine years, Berkshire Hathaway has compiled a list of the safest countries to visit worldwide. This list is based on a survey of travelers, evaluated alongside data from the Global Peace Index and the U.S. State Department's travel safety ratings. The report also takes into account the average GeoSure Global scores of major cities in each country. However, the definition of what makes a place safe has evolved over time.

"In the past, a safe place was defined as one largely free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place safe from disease outbreaks. Now, it's where all people can move freely without discrimination or harassment," the company noted in its 2024 rankings.

According to the report, Canada is ranked as the safest destination, climbing from sixth place in 2023. The key factors that propelled Canada to the top include its cold weather and low population density, which contribute to a safer travel environment.

Moreover, Canada ranks first in transportation safety, low violent crime rates, and health measures. It is also considered the safest place for women, as well as for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. However, Berkshire Hathaway does caution travelers about natural disasters, particularly wildfires. "Canada's vast forests were seemingly all burning, reducing air quality in most major Canadian cities. This has made travel to Canada challenging for those with respiratory conditions."

Switzerland secured the second spot for 2024, jumping from ninth place in 2023, with high marks for its history of low crime and overall safety. However, like Canada, Switzerland is not without natural risks, including avalanches and rockslides.

Rounding out the top five safest countries are Norway in third place, Ireland in fourth, and the Netherlands in fifth—dropping from first place in 2023 due to an increase in petty crime.

This ranking solidifies Canada as not only a beautiful travel destination but also one that is exceptionally safe for everyone. The security Canada offers, from transportation to health measures, makes it an ideal destination for 2024. For travelers seeking peace of mind during their journey, Canada is the perfect choice.
