HERSTORY EXHIBITION: WOMEN'S STORIES THROUGH THE LENS OF MONEY AT MUBI

Inviting visitors to explore the inspiring journey of Indonesian women, from challenges to triumphs

The Bank Indonesia Museum (MuBI) is once again hosting an engaging exhibition that highlights the journey of women through the Indonesian rupiah. The exhibition titled 'Herstory: Women's Stories Through the Lens of Money' offers a visual and narrative experience depicting the transformation of women's roles from limitation to freedom. The exhibition will run until February 16, 2025, with an entrance fee of only IDR 5,000, and is open Tuesday to Sunday.

Exhibition Concept: From Darkness to Light
This exhibition adopts a unique concept, 'From Darkness to Light', divided into several zones that reflect the journey of women throughout history. Visitors are invited to explore the journey of women from different perspectives, starting with Her, transitioning to I, and finally evolving into Us (Her-Me-Us). Each zone presents a collection of Indonesian rupiah featuring women depicted on the banknotes issued from 1952 to 2022, complemented by interactive media that adds depth to the visitors' experience.

Entrance Zone: A Warm Sunset Atmosphere
The first zone, Entrance, greets visitors with a calming sunset atmosphere. This zone provides a cozy and inviting space for interaction, creating a warm ambiance to start the journey through the exhibition.

Dark Room Zone: The Limitation of Women's Roles
Upon entering the Dark Room Zone, visitors will experience a more somber atmosphere that reflects the limitations placed on women's roles in the past. In this zone, artworks depicting a bed, kitchen, well, and dark corridors serve as symbols of domestic roles confined to the household. Tragic stories such as slavery, prostitution, and patriarchal culture are also presented in this zone, reminding us of the struggles faced by women.

Fighting the Darkness Zone: Nusantara Women Fighting the Darkness
The Fighting the Darkness Zone introduces an important narrative about the resistance of Nusantara women who freed themselves from the shackles of darkness. In this room, visitors can view collections of five female heroes, such as R.A. Kartini, Martha Christina Tiahahu, and Dewi Sartika, who symbolize the fight against injustice. A symbolic torch is displayed in the showcase area to represent the spirit of resistance, while visitors are also encouraged to reflect on their own spirit through a reflective mirror.

Light Emerging Zone: Women's Freedom and Roles
The Light Emerging Zone showcases women who have now experienced freedom and are actively participating in various fields. Here, visitors can see various female professions displayed in pop-up forms, as well as accessories that represent women’s attributes on money. This zone portrays the transformation of women who are no longer limited and can contribute to all aspects of life.

Balcony Zone: Women's Achievements and Successes
In the Balcony Zone, visitors will see depictions of women who have reached the pinnacle of success. This zone is filled with sunlight and bright ornaments that represent women’s achievements in various fields. Artworks created by schoolchildren, coloring images displayed in the exhibition space, are also showcased as symbols of progress and achievement.

Coda: A Space for Visitor Reflection
The exhibition concludes with Coda, a space where visitors can share their impressions, messages, and experiences after exploring all the exhibition zones. Coda serves as a place for visitors to reflect on the long journey that women have undertaken through the ages.

Interactive Media
Additionally, the exhibition is equipped with interactive media inviting visitors to participate, such as observing the batik-making process and listening to inspirational quotes that highlight the spirit of women fighting against stigma and injustice.

The 'Herstory' exhibition not only offers visual entertainment but also provides an in-depth educational experience about the struggles and achievements of women in Indonesian history. Don’t miss the chance to visit this exhibition and experience the historic journey of women through the lens of money.
