INTERNATIONAL MASK FESTIVAL 2024: EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF MASKS AND CULTURAL UNITY IN SURAKARTA

Celebrating the symbol of global cultural solidarity, featuring art, music, cuisine, and crafts that unite nations in harmony

The International Mask Festival (IMF) 2024 is taking place in Surakarta on November 15-16, offering a cultural celebration that highlights the rich art of mask-making from various corners of the world. Held annually since 2014, this festival is part of the Karisma Event Nusantara 2024, aiming to introduce mask art as a world heritage and strengthen international solidarity through art.

This year's theme, "The Beauty of Solidarity," emphasizes the importance of cultural harmony amid differences. This theme also serves as a response to the global situation filled with conflicts, hoping to convey a message of peace through culture.

The festival will feature approximately 70 art delegations from abroad, including mask artists from Korea, India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan. On the Indonesian side, 35 groups from different regions such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Bali are participating, bringing together more than 200 performing artists. Additionally, IMF will host a seminar with speakers from various countries, including a professor from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) Malaysia, who will share knowledge about the art of masks.

One of the main objectives of IMF 2024 is to promote international recognition of Indonesian mask culture, which has already received acknowledgment in countries such as Korea, where several mask dances are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage.

The festival will not only showcase mask performances but also offer a culinary bazaar featuring traditional Solo dishes, a craft exhibition, and musical performances from local groups like Vani Suki, Purneo, Andarbeni, and Jawa Tulen. The bazaar will provide visitors the chance to enjoy authentic Solo cuisine and purchase unique local crafts. With a target of around 5,000 visitors over the two nights, IMF is expected to positively impact Surakarta's economy, especially in terms of accommodation and consumption for artists and tourists.

Additionally, IMF serves as an educational platform, inviting the public to better understand and appreciate the art of masks. Each mask on display carries a unique story and reflects the cultural characteristics of its region of origin. Visitors will have the chance to learn about the meaning behind the intricate carvings and colors of the masks, which represent the long and rich history of mask art in the Indonesian Archipelago.

IMF 2024 calls on all of us to celebrate cultural differences as a collective strength. In a world often divided by differences and conflict, art provides a universal language that connects nations and carries a message of peace. As part of cultural diplomacy, this festival not only celebrates the beauty of mask art but also strengthens international solidarity, encouraging mutual support in celebrating both diversity and unity.

By the time the festival kicks off, Surakarta will host an exciting array of activities, offering something for everyone: from engaging cultural performances and enlightening seminars to delectable food and locally crafted treasures.
