DIPLOMACY ON A PLATE: THE TASTE OF ANGKOR BRINGS TOGETHER DIPLOMATS AND BUSINESS LEADERS
A remarkable celebration of culture and connection where exquisite Cambodian flavors bridge hearts and inspire global harmony

A luncheon themed The Taste of Angkor, hosted by Ambassador Tean Samnang and his spouse, Sim Sopheapnila, welcomed around 60 distinguished guests, including ambassadors, their spouses, and prominent business leaders, on October 24, 2025. More than just a meal, the event stood as a genuine expression of culinary diplomacy, showcasing the authentic flavors of Cambodia to the world.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Samnang highlighted that food is one of the most eloquent languages of diplomacy. “A shared table can open hearts, invite conversation, and remind us that peace and prosperity are nurtured not only in conference rooms but also through meals prepared with care,” he said.
The dishes served were inspired by The Taste of Angkor, an internationally acclaimed Cambodian cookbook that celebrates the nation’s rich flavors and culinary traditions. Ambassador Samnang described the menu as a journey through Cambodia’s markets, farms, rivers, and coasts, while reflecting the nation’s cultural spirit of togetherness. He also proposed a toast to friendship, opportunity, and the unifying power of culture.

Co-host Sim Sopheapnila introduced the culinary foundations that inspired the menu, featuring two key elements of Khmer cuisine. Kroeung, a fragrant paste made from lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, garlic, and kaffir lime leaves, and Prahok, Cambodia’s iconic fermented fish that adds depth and character to many dishes. “We chose recipes that represent the warmth of Cambodian home cooking and the vibrancy of its street food,” she explained. “We hope these flavors bring the comfort of Cambodian kitchens to every bite.”

The four-course meal presented the signature balance of Cambodian cuisine—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy—paired with jasmine rice and Kampot pepper. Beyond the flavors, the luncheon served as a meaningful platform for fostering connections and exploring collaboration. “May this gathering inspire new partnerships among cultures and industries, chefs and farmers, innovators and investors, to promote trade, tourism, and environmental sustainability,” added Ambassador Samnang.
Guests praised the culinary team for translating the cookbook’s essence onto the plate with creativity and precision. Warm yet purposeful, the event highlighted how a nation’s soft power can be expressed through hospitality and cuisine. Through The Taste of Angkor, diplomacy and culture came together beautifully, strengthening friendships and opening doors to lasting collaboration.
