DIPLOMACY MET CULTURE AT EUROPE DAY 2025 CELEBRATION IN JAKARTA
An evening filled with unity, dialogue, and harmony unfolded, vibrant with friendship and shared values
The Europe Day 2025 celebration, held on May 9 at the Grand Ballroom of AYANA Midplaza Hotel in Jakarta, became a meaningful occasion to reaffirm the strong partnership between Indonesia and the European Union. Taking place on a Friday evening, the event brought together diplomats, senior government officials, members of parliament, and distinguished guests from various sectors.
The celebration was hosted by key EU representatives: the Ambassador of the European Union to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Mr. Denis Chaibi, and Mrs. Elena Boggio-Chaibi; the EU Ambassador to ASEAN, His Excellency Mr. Sujiro Seam; and the Head of the European Investment Bank’s Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Mrs. Sunita Lukkhoo-Tassone, accompanied by Mr. Francesco Tassone.
Representing the Government of Indonesia, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) delivered a congratulatory message to the EU delegation. In his speech, AHY underscored the importance of strengthening Indonesia-EU cooperation, especially in facing shared global challenges such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, and pressures on the international trading system. He expressed optimism that this partnership would continue to evolve for the shared prosperity of both sides.
The participation of leaders and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) from the Indonesian House of Representatives further highlighted the strategic significance of the event. Their presence reinforced the essential role of inter-parliamentary diplomacy in fostering equitable and mutually beneficial multilateral collaboration.
Beyond the formalities, the evening also celebrated cultural connections. The European Union Choir captivated the audience with a heartfelt performance of a traditional song from East Nusa Tenggara, symbolizing unity in diversity and the warmth of cross-cultural appreciation.
Europe Day, commemorated every May 9, marks the anniversary of Robert Schuman’s landmark 1950 speech, which laid the groundwork for the European Coal and Steel Community—the forerunner of today’s European Union. The day serves as a powerful reminder that peace, unity, and solidarity remain the cornerstones of international cooperation.
Through this celebration, Indonesia and the European Union once again reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing a future that is inclusive, democratic, and sustainable.
