Boasting unique architecture and stunning natural views, it invites visitors to fully experience its allure
Candi Barong is one of the historical sites located in Dusun Candisari, Desa Sambirejo, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. This temple is a Hindu heritage site that was built in the 9th to 10th centuries AD, thought to have been established during the reign of Rakai Walaing Pu Kumbhayoni. Its location in the Ratu Boko temple complex, close to other temples like Candi Banyunibo and Candi Ijo, makes it an important part of the historical heritage of the Mataram Kingdom.
Candi Barong, which was once known as Candi Sari Sorogedung, is situated on top of Bukit Batur Agung and offers a stunning natural panorama. The temple consists of two main temples and several perwara temples, forming a captivating temple complex. The uniqueness of its architecture is evident in its stepped pyramid-like shape, which distinguishes it from most other Hindu temples. The name "Barong" is derived from a kala ornament resembling a barong, a symbol that adds a mystical and magical aura to the temple.
In addition to its unique architecture, Candi Barong is also known for its beautiful surrounding nature. From here, visitors can enjoy the sight of expansive green rice fields and witness a spectacular sunset. This temple not only offers a historical tourism experience but also provides an opportunity for visitors to soak in the strong spiritual atmosphere through the mythological reliefs on the temple walls, which depict stories from ancient times.
Candi Barong is also an ideal tourist destination for those who want to experience the spiritual and cultural side of Yogyakarta. With a combination of natural beauty and high historical value, this temple is an attractive place to visit.
Candi Barong is equipped with adequate facilities such as toilets, a prayer room, ticket counters, parking areas, and a security post. The temple is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00 WIB, with an affordable entrance fee of IDR 5,000 for local visitors and IDR 10,000 for foreign visitors. The location of Candi Barong is also easily accessible, simply follow the asphalt road from the Abhayagiri restaurant until you reach a junction, then turn left and continue along the road until the temple is visible on the right-hand side.
With all its unique features and beauty, Candi Barong is not only a historically valuable site but also a place that offers a rich cultural and spiritual tourism experience. This temple remains a major attraction for history enthusiasts and travelers who want to explore the cultural richness of Yogyakarta.
