25 YEARS OF CAN’S GALLERY: CELEBRATING A LEGACY WITH THE EXHIBITION “CONTINUUM”
A quarter century unfolds, bridging time, uniting generations, and celebrating the enduring spirit of Indonesian art
Can’s Gallery’s long journey in shaping Indonesia’s art scene has entered a new chapter. This year, the gallery in Petojo Selatan, Central Jakarta, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Reaching a quarter century is no small feat, as only a few galleries in Indonesia have managed to endure and remain consistently active for such a long period.
Founded by Tommy Sutomo and Inge Santoso, Can’s Gallery—originally known as Galeri Canna in Kelapa Gading—has weathered many challenges. “Over 25 years in Indonesia’s art world, we have faced both joys and struggles. We went through the economic recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the shifts in the art market, and we are grateful to have overcome them,” said Inge. Tommy recalled that in 2009, despite a global economic downturn, Can’s Gallery still joined Art Asia Miami in the United States, bringing 10 Indonesian artists with large-scale works.
In its 25 years, Can’s Gallery has successfully organized 177 art exhibitions. These included 92 group shows, 29 participations in international art fairs, and numerous solo exhibitions. A total of 491 artists—both established names and newcomers—have been given a platform to express their creativity through the gallery.
To commemorate this milestone, Can’s Gallery is presenting a group exhibition titled “Continuum.” The exhibition runs from September 19 to October 20, 2025, at Can’s Gallery, and continues at Bentara Budaya Jakarta from September 27 to October 11, 2025. Featuring 59 artists from different generations, 33 are showcased at Can’s Gallery and the rest at Bentara Budaya Jakarta.
The lineup includes renowned figures such as Agus Suwage, Eddie Hara, Ay Tjoe Christine, and Entang Wiharso. Senior artists like Goenawan Mohamad and FX Harsono also take part, alongside rising talents such as Muklay, Suvi Wahyudianto, and Oki Rey Montha. The works span a wide range of themes, mediums, and visual expressions, highlighting the diversity of Indonesia’s contemporary art landscape.
Instead of uniting the exhibition under a single theme, the gallery and curators chose to give artists complete freedom to create according to their own artistic direction. This approach allows greater flexibility for artists to prepare their works while staying true to their individual practices. The title “Continuum” reflects continuity—both as a reflection on the past and as a vision for the future. Every step taken forms a meaningful trace, offering lessons and inspiration for the journey ahead.
Beyond the exhibition, Continuum also features discussions, artist talks, and performance art. Through this 25th anniversary celebration, Can’s Gallery reaffirms its place as one of Indonesia’s longest-standing art galleries, dedicated to supporting artists across generations. More than a celebration, Continuum serves as a reminder of the value of perseverance, continuity, and commitment in the world of art.
