FOOD MONSTER PROJECT: PLAYFUL BITES – A CROCHET WORLD OF FLAVOR AND IMAGINATION BY MULYANA AT DIA.LO.GUE ARTSPACE

An imaginative feast where colors, textures, and emotions intertwine, turning everyday meals into a joyful celebration of art and connection

Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace, in collaboration with The Mogus, presents a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed Indonesian artist Mulyana titled “Food Monster Project: Playful Bites.” The exhibition runs from October 1 to December 31, 2025, at Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace, Kemang Selatan 99A, South Jakarta, supported by Artotel Thamrin and Artotel Wanderlust.

Through “Playful Bites,” Mulyana invites the public to embark on a multisensory journey that blends art, texture, and taste. Staying true to his distinctive modular crochet creations known as “monsters,” he presents an imaginative universe that connects visual art, gastronomy, and social reflection in an engaging and interactive way.

Known by his alter ego Mogus, Mulyana builds a vibrant, heartwarming world through his intricate crochet techniques. In this exhibition, he fuses visual art with culinary imagination through installations inspired by various foods. These works transcend aesthetics, offering a reflection on togetherness and cultural identity, where food serves as a symbol of connection and shared humanity.

A major highlight of the exhibition is the Food Monster Installation, a participatory artwork featuring crocheted food forms that embody memories, relationships, and communal gatherings. The piece was inspired by Mulyana’s experience during quarantine in South Korea, when food became a meaningful bridge between people despite physical distance. Instead of consuming it, he chose to “serve” it through crochet creations shaped as playful monsters.

Born in Bandung in 1984, Mulyana has built an international reputation, with his works featured in prestigious exhibitions such as “Remembering Our Collective Future” in New York (2024) and “Water in Asian Art” at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan (2023). His modular approach and use of recycled materials have become his hallmark, emphasizing sustainability while enriching his visual storytelling.

Through “Food Monster Project: Playful Bites,” Mulyana once again showcases his ability to intertwine art, social awareness, and personal narrative. The exhibition not only captivates the senses but also invites visitors to reflect on the bonds between people, food, and the essence of togetherness in a constantly evolving world.
