NUON PUSHES FOR THE RISE OF LOCAL GAMES AMID FOREIGN DOMINANCE
Igniting a new spirit for the local gaming industry, empowering homegrown talent to step onto the global stage
PT Nuon Digital Indonesia (Nuon) continues to show its dedication to the national gaming industry through the Main Bareng (MaBar) local gaming event, held after the Coordination Meeting on the Implementation of Presidential Regulation 19/2024. Hosted at the Sasana Bhakti Praja Building, Ministry of Home Affairs in Central Jakarta, the event was part of the Ayo HARGAI campaign, themed "Proud to Play Local Games." It attracted significant public attention, particularly because it was attended by high-ranking government officials, industry associations, regional leaders, and gaming industry professionals. This event highlighted Nuon's commitment to strengthening the domestic gaming ecosystem and accelerating the growth of Indonesia's creative industry.
Nuon’s CEO, Aris Sudewo, emphasized that foreign products still dominate the local gaming market. "Currently, local games account for only 0.5% of the domestic market, while the remaining 99.5% is dominated by imported games. At Nuon, we believe Indonesia has great potential in this sector, and this event is part of our effort to raise awareness and pride in homegrown creations while strengthening the foundation of the national gaming industry," Aris explained.
The MaBar event underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and the industry. Government officials and ministers in attendance had the opportunity to experience local games firsthand, including Paw Rumble and Dreadhaunt, published by Nuon. By introducing these games directly to policymakers, the event aimed to spark deeper discussions about the government’s role in supporting the growth of Indonesia’s creative industry. Aris also stressed that the gaming industry is not just about entertainment; it plays a crucial role in developing the creative economy, which can become a key driver of national economic growth.
In collaboration with the Indonesian Game Association (AGI) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Nuon also launched Game Asset Nusantara (GANA). GANA is an innovative platform offering digital assets, including 3D characters and visual effects, for game developers and content creators. Designed to accelerate content creation, the platform also serves as a marketplace where creators can sell and distribute their assets commercially. GANA is expected to foster a more inclusive and sustainable digital economy ecosystem.
This initiative is considered a significant breakthrough in the national gaming industry, particularly in creating opportunities for local talent to thrive amid intense global competition. Nuon remains committed to ongoing collaboration with the government and industry players, aiming for local games to compete not just in the domestic market but also on the international stage. "With the talent we have, it's time for local games to emerge as a major force in Indonesia's creative economy," Aris concluded.
The event reinforced a crucial message: supporting local games requires more than just words; it requires concrete actions from all stakeholders. With strong collaboration between the government, industry leaders, and local creators, Indonesia’s gaming industry is poised for rapid growth and is expected to make a significant contribution to the national economy.
