JAKARTA COMMEMORATES BRAZILIAN NATIONAL DAY: A NEW HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

The celebration involved weaving a vibrant tapestry of culture and camaraderie, while igniting new hopes for a brighter tomorrow

Brazil celebrates its Independence Day every year on September 7, known as Dia da Independência or Sete de Setembro. This occasion symbolizes the Brazilian people's struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule, making it much more than just a date on the calendar.

This year, a special event took place on September 11, 2024, at St. Regis Jakarta. During this celebration, the Brazilian Ambassador to Indonesia, George Monteiro Prata, highlighted the importance of the occasion as a chance to honor the strong bilateral relationship between Brazil and Indonesia. He noted that both countries, as major democracies in the southern hemisphere, share a commitment to combating poverty and promoting sustainable development. The event served not only to celebrate independence but also to strengthen cooperation between the two nations. "We celebrate two countries that live in peace and multiculturalism," Prata remarked, emphasizing their common belief in dialogue and consensus on global issues.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including government officials, business leaders, sponsors, and other invitees such as H.E. Henrique Archanjo Ferraro (Ambassador of Brazil to ASEAN), Mr. John Wempi Wetipo (Vice Minister of Home Affairs and Guest of Honor), H.E. Nararya S. Soeprapto (Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs), Mr. Sihol Aritonang (President Director of PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper - APRIL Group), Mr. Ignatius Indiarto (PT. Asiabeef Biofarm Indonesia), Mr. Vinicius Mendes Ferreira (Chief Development Officer of PT Vale Indonesia), and Mr. Bali Moniaga (Senior Adviser of Salim Group).

The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with a spirit of friendship, inviting guests to experience Brazilian culture through food, music, and art.

Prata also underscored the role of Brazil and Indonesia as leaders in environmental issues and renewable energy production. "We celebrate countries that are major producers of food and dynamic technology," he stated, highlighting the significance of both nations in ensuring global food and energy security.

Moreover, Prata expressed hope that this celebration would enhance bilateral relations and expand trade cooperation. "I want to celebrate the present and our bright future, which holds many reasons for us to celebrate," he said, conveying optimism for future collaboration.

The Indonesian government also welcomed the revival of the Action Plan for 2023–2026, which provides a solid foundation for advancing cooperation in various sectors, including defense, renewable energy, agriculture, health, and innovation-based economies. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, John Wempi Wetipo, expressed hope that the 9th Indonesia-Brazil Bilateral Consultation Forum could be held next year to explore mutually beneficial cooperation.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1953, the relationship between Indonesia and Brazil has generally been positive. The celebration of Brazil’s independence in Jakarta serves as a reminder of their shared history and a hopeful outlook for the future. With a spirit of friendship and close cooperation, Brazil and Indonesia can set an example for other nations in promoting peace, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
