INDONESIA EMERGES AS THE LEADING FORCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA’S PREMIUM STREAMING MARKET

Indonesia’s booming local content captivates viewers and reshapes Southeast Asia’s streaming landscape.

The premium streaming market in Southeast Asia experienced remarkable growth throughout 2025. According to the latest data from Media Partners Asia (MPA), Indonesia has been the main driver of this surge, with paid accounts growing 19 percent year-on-year to reach approximately 26.9 million accounts out of a total of 61 million paid accounts across the region’s five key countries: Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.

What stands out is that Indonesia is not only adding new accounts but also leading in total watch time. In the fourth quarter of 2025, total premium watch time across Southeast Asia reached 4.2 billion hours, up 8 percent quarter-on-quarter. This growth reflects the region’s increasingly mature streaming consumption and demonstrates strong viewer engagement and loyalty.

This momentum coincides with a major milestone for Indonesian local content. Domestic productions have matched Korean content in audience share, each capturing around 30 percent, with user reach nearly equal at approximately 47 to 48 percent. This shows that the quality and appeal of local content are gaining recognition both domestically and across the region.

Several Indonesian films and series ranked among the top-performing titles during the quarter, particularly those from Vidio, which accounted for 24 percent of total watch time.

At the regional level, Netflix continues to lead in monthly active users and total watch time. However, the significant growth in Indonesia highlights a shift in digital consumption patterns and increasing viewer confidence in local productions. The success of Indonesian content competing with international titles indicates that the domestic market is now a key driver in shaping streaming trends across Southeast Asia.

With growing account numbers, high watch time, and internationally recognized local content, Indonesia has established itself as a hub for growth and innovation in the regional streaming ecosystem. This opens greater opportunities for local productions to shine and become major attractions for audiences throughout Southeast Asia.
