CELEBRATION OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA AND INDONESIA
The commemoration featured a screening of No Man’s Land, symbolizing the hope for peace through a powerful story of unity amidst adversity.
The Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina marked a milestone in diplomatic relations with the Republic of Indonesia by hosting a special event on October 30, 2024. Held at the RRI Jakarta Auditorium, the gathering welcomed numerous distinguished guests to celebrate this 30-year relationship.
His Excellency Ambassador Armin Limo of Bosnia and Herzegovina expressed deep gratitude for the strong bond of friendship between the two nations. He highlighted how diplomatic collaboration over the past three decades has successfully strengthened political, economic, and cultural ties. "As we celebrate three decades of friendship and cooperation, we must also look to the future,” Ambassador Armin remarked optimistically.
The ambassador also acknowledged global challenges and opportunities, such as technological advancements, environmental issues, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. He stated that the relationship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Indonesia would continue to adapt and thrive in response to these changes. “Our commitment to sustainable growth remains the cornerstone of our relationship,” he added.
In closing, Ambassador Armin expressed his heartfelt thanks to the government and people of Indonesia for their friendship and support over the years. He also shared his affection for Indonesia, saying, “I fell in love with its people, I fell in love with this country. I am deeply grateful to have been placed in this beautiful country.”
The event also highlighted the two nations' cultural connection through the screening of No Man’s Land (2001), a Bosnian film directed by Danis Tanović. No Man’s Land is an acclaimed film that presents a striking view of the harsh realities and absurdities of war. Set during the 1990s Bosnian conflict, the film earned international acclaim, including Academy Award and Golden Globe wins for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002. The story follows two soldiers on opposing sides—Čiki (played by Branko Đurić) from Bosnia and Nino (played by Rene Bitorajac) from Serbia—who find themselves trapped in a trench known as “no man’s land.” Their situation becomes even more complex when a third soldier, injured and lying on a landmine, adds to the high-stakes tension.
Through an honest and darkly humorous approach, No Man’s Land delivers a powerful anti-war message by exploring the conflict between its characters, which symbolizes the confusion and tragedy of war. Director Danis Tanović skillfully uses close-up shots and the confined trench setting to convey the soldiers’ desperation, creating an intense and impactful experience for the audience. The film also critiques international organizations’ limitations, highlighting how UN peacekeepers, constrained by protocols, sometimes appear powerless in conflict zones.
The film’s sharp dialogue and dark humor add a human dimension, immersing viewers in the tragic realities and ironies of war. Its moving message underscores the suffering conflict brings and the urgent need for genuine and compassionate peace efforts from the international community.
The event concluded with warm applause from the audience, who appreciated how cinema can convey messages of friendship and peace across differences. Through this screening, the hope is that the bond between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Indonesia will grow even stronger, promoting humanity's values in international relations.
