AN AUTHENTIC HISTORICAL EXPERIENCE AT HOUSE OF TUGU, RICH IN STORIES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

Discover a captivating blend of old-world charm and artistic elegance in every detail of Jakarta’s Old Town

Jakarta’s Old Town has long been recognized as a historical hub, preserving traces of the past through its heritage buildings. Today, the area is further revitalized by the arrival of House of Tugu Old Town Jakarta—a hotel that is more than just a place to stay, but a living museum that authentically captures the forgotten stories of Batavia.

Officially opened in November 2024, House of Tugu is located on Jalan Kali Besar Barat. This hotel revives the legacy of Peranakan Chinese culture through thematic interiors, historical art collections, and spaces designed to evoke the splendor of a bygone era. Taking a different approach from conventional hotels, House of Tugu offers a harmonious blend of art, history, and lifestyle.

More than just a place to stay, House of Tugu features the Museum Peranakan Jakarta, which showcases artifacts and artworks from the Batavia era. The building itself was once a grand residence that served as a sugar warehouse owned by Oei Tiong Ham, a legendary tycoon famously known as “the richest man between Shanghai and Australia.” The Kali Besar canal in front of the building was once a vital transport route for the distribution of sugar and other goods.

Each room at the hotel is uniquely designed, with its own narrative. From the Nyonya Besar Suite to the Oei Tiong Ham Suite, every room features classic beds, colonial-style bathrooms, and thoughtful design details that transport guests to a different time. Some rooms even include balconies overlooking the canal and nearby heritage buildings.

Themed spaces such as the Soekarno Room, Kali Macan Room, and Charlie Chaplin Room offer captivating stories from various historical periods, complete with photo collections, paintings, and authentic memorabilia. The hotel’s ballroom is modeled after the Societeit Harmonie—a once-prestigious European club in the 19th century—and accommodates up to 100 guests.

To enhance the experience, three dining venues reflect the richness of cultural traditions. Jajaghu Restaurant fuses art and flavor through Asian-Western cuisine, De Tiger Poolside Lounge offers a curated selection of fine beverages, and Babah Koffie serves coffee and Peranakan delicacies in a nostalgic colonial setting.

With only 25 exclusive rooms, House of Tugu Old Town Jakarta provides an intimate and immersive stay. For visitors who wish to enjoy the historic ambiance without an overnight stay, guided tours and dining experiences are available with a minimum spend. Here, Jakarta’s history is brought to life—with an artistic touch that leaves a lasting impression.
