FIVE CITIES AS ROLE MODELS FOR THE KATA KREATIF 2024: FOSTERING INNOVATION IN INDONESIA'S CREATIVE ECONOMY
Empowering local communities to drive economic growth and sustainable development
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) has once again launched its flagship program, the Creative District/City Development 2024 (KaTa Kreatif 2024). Entering its fourth year, the program has involved 94 districts/cities across Indonesia, with more than 14,500 creative economy actors who have received facilitation since the launch of KaTa Kreatif in 2021.
KaTa Kreatif 2024 continues to focus on enhancing innovation and entrepreneurship in the creative industry sector. This program aims to provide positive impact and broad benefits for local communities through the development of distinctive creative economy subsectors in each region. To support the sustainability of this program, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, has designated five districts/cities as role models in the development of leading creative economy subsectors in Indonesia.
Banyumas: Strong Performing Arts
Banyumas Regency, Central Java, was selected as one of the role models for KaTa Kreatif 2024 due to its rich performing arts subsector, such as wayang, ebeg, and lengger. Banyumas even won the KaTa Kreatif 2023 award in the performing arts category due to the creative industry's ability to blend tradition with a modern touch. This collaboration has contributed to the local economy, making Banyumas an inspiring example in the development of the performing arts subsector.
Sleman: The Growth of Film and Animation
Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, also made it onto the list of role models for KaTa Kreatif 2024 due to the rapid growth of its film, animation, and video (FAV) subsector. Sleman's success is reflected in the increasing demand for local animation studios that have gained international attention. The presence of five universities and two higher education institutions with relevant departments further strengthens Sleman’s position as a center for FAV sector development. This creates significant opportunities for the younger generation to pursue careers in film and animation.
Batang: The Enchanting Rifaiyah Batik Craft
Batang Regency, Central Java, is known for its excellence in the craft subsector, particularly Rifaiyah batik, a cultural heritage unique to the region. Rifaiyah batik not only introduces distinctive motifs but also symbolizes the courage to preserve tradition. Batang also boasts other notable craft products, such as action figure crafts, wooden bags, and wooden watches, further enriching the region’s creative economy sector.
Makassar: Unique Culinary Delights
Makassar City has become a role model for KaTa Kreatif 2024 with its highly distinctive culinary subsector. The culinary excellence of Makassar, rich in historical and cultural value, offers unique appeal. Dishes such as Coto Makassar, Pisang Epe, and Es Pisang Ijo are some examples of the region's unique culinary creations. This city continues to explore the potential of culinary arts as a creative economy sector, which not only boosts the local economy but also introduces Indonesia’s culinary wealth to the world.
Pangkalpinang: Successful Otak-Otak Ase Culinary
Pangkalpinang City was also chosen as a role model for KaTa Kreatif 2024 due to its culinary subsector, particularly the Otak-Otak Ase product, which has become a local specialty. The success of this product has not only been enjoyed by the community but has also had a significant economic impact, generating approximately Rp130 million in taxes per month for the local government. This demonstrates the large economic potential of the culinary creative economy and inspires other creative industry players to improve their product quality.
With the KaTa Kreatif 2024 program, it is hoped that more regions will be able to develop their distinctive creative economy subsectors. This program not only facilitates creative industry actors but also opens opportunities for sustainable local economic development.
