FESTIVAL LOM PLAI 2026: EXPERIENCE THE AUTHENTIC TRADITIONS OF DAYAK WEHEA
Showcasing harvest rituals, authentic culture, and cultural tourism experiences in East Kutai
Amid the lush forests of East Kalimantan, an ancestral tradition has come alive once again, capturing national attention. Festival Lom Plai 2026 is now underway, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in an authentic and meaningful cultural experience. Held in Nehas Liah Bing Village, Muara Wahau District, the festival is more than just a celebration—it is a spiritual and cultural journey for the Dayak Wehea community.
This year is particularly special as Festival Lom Plai has officially been included in the Karisma Event Nusantara 2026, making it part of the national event calendar that showcases Indonesia’s rich traditions on a broader stage.
What is Festival Lom Plai?
Festival Lom Plai is an annual customary ritual conducted after the rice harvest as an expression of gratitude by the Dayak Wehea community. This tradition has been passed down for generations and has maintained its authenticity to this day. The highlight of the festival, known as Embob Jengea or the harvest feast, involves all members of the community, from children to the village elders.
Beneath the festival’s lively atmosphere lies a profound story that forms the spiritual foundation of Lom Plai. According to tradition, a severe drought once caused crop failure and widespread famine. In this difficult time, Boq Diang Yung received a divine revelation to sacrifice his daughter, Long Diang Yung, in order to save the community. It is believed that from this sacrifice, her blood transformed into abundant rice crops. Since then, Lom Plai has become a mandatory ritual to honor and remember this act of sacrifice.
New Attractions: Hudoq Mascot and Festival Visuals
One of this year’s exciting innovations is the introduction of a large Hudoq mask mascot placed at strategic points throughout the festival. The Hudoq mask is an important symbol in Dayak culture, traditionally used in rituals to ward off evil spirits and bring blessings. This visual element not only strengthens the festival’s cultural identity but also adds an extra attraction for visitors and tourists.
Cultural and Traditional Activities
Festival Lom Plai 2026 offers a variety of activities that reflect the rich heritage of the Dayak Wehea people. These include traditional rituals and sacred processions, performances of traditional dance and music, traditional games such as spinning tops, stilts, and blowpipes, local artisan and SME bazaars, traditional skill competitions such as wood carving, and folk entertainment along with large-scale performances. Each activity serves not only as a spectacle but also as a cultural learning experience for younger generations and visitors alike.
The festival’s climax, continuing until April 29, 2026, provides the perfect opportunity for tourists to experience the uniqueness of these traditions firsthand. For culture enthusiasts, this experience offers something unavailable elsewhere—authenticity, depth of meaning, and a connection with living traditions. The festival is not only a cultural journey but also a journey toward understanding deeper life values.
