UBUD WRITERS AND READERS FESTIVAL 2024: A CELEBRATION OF LITERATURE AND IDEAS IN BALI

Immerse yourself in a literary wonderland where global voices and local culture converge

The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival (UWRF) 2024 returns with unmatched charm and distinction. Scheduled for October 24 to 27, this renowned event stands as one of Southeast Asia's premier literary celebrations. Hosted at Casa Luna in Ubud, Bali—a celebrated center for arts and culture—UWRF attracts writers and artists from around the world while showcasing the local culture's richness and beauty. Founded in 2004 by Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati, UWRF is recognized as the largest and most significant literary festival in Southeast Asia.

This year's festival offers a diverse array of events, from thought-provoking discussions to intimate literary dinners. Attendees will embark on an engaging literary journey, experiencing presentations from both international and local authors. Highlighted guests include Sathnam Sanghera from the UK, Claire Kilroy from Ireland, and Siang Lu from Australia, alongside prominent Indonesian writers such as Dee Lestari, Seno Gumira Adjidarma, Wayan Jengki Sunarta, M. Aan Mansyur, Ratih Kumala, and Norman Erikson Pasaribu.

A major highlight of UWRF 2024 is the appearance of Maria Ressa, the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Ressa will delve into the effects of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism, emphasizing the need for ethical and unbiased reporting in today's fragmented world.

The festival will also honor the late Pramoedya Ananta Toer, a celebrated Indonesian writer and intellectual. His legacy will be explored in a discussion led by his brother, Soesilo Toer, offering deep insights into Pramoedya's influence on literature and progressive thought in Indonesia.

Beyond literary discussions, UWRF enriches the cultural experience with live performances by artists like Sal Priadi, Petra Sihombing, and BOI AKIH from the Netherlands. The festival will also feature screenings of emerging Indonesian films, including two that have received international acclaim, adding a dynamic cultural dimension for attendees.

Additionally, UWRF will address pressing issues, including human rights and politics in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Speakers such as Sara M. Saleh, Ma Thida, and Paul Caruana Galizia will provide profound insights and analyses on critical topics relevant to today's global context.

By uniting voices from around the world in a vibrant and inspiring setting, UWRF 2024 invites visitors to not only witness but actively engage in a dialogue that broadens perspectives and enriches understanding in a truly captivating environment.
