SARONG HARMONY: AN INDONESIAN ARTIST’S WORK SHOWCASING ASEAN’S DIVERSITY AT WORLD EXPO 2025 OSAKA

A stunning masterpiece that brings together heritage, sustainability, and modern technology

World Expo 2025 Osaka will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on Yumeshima Island, Osaka, Japan. Over 184 days, this global exhibition will serve as a platform for countries to showcase innovation, culture, and sustainable solutions. With the theme Designing Future Society for Our Lives, World Expo 2025 aims to shape a more prosperous and sustainable future.

Sarong Harmony: A Symbol of Unity and Sustainability

One of the featured artworks at this exhibition is Sarong Harmony, a contemporary installation by Yogyakarta-based artist Caroline Rika Winata. This piece was commissioned by the ASEAN Secretariat and is presented in collaboration with Artopology. Carrying the theme Building Bridges, Sarong Harmony symbolizes unity, cultural heritage, and the aspirations of ASEAN nations.

The installation features a large woven sarong made from recycled clothing and textile waste, crafted using traditional weaving techniques. It consists of ten distinct panels, each representing an ASEAN member country. The choice of sarong as the central element is deliberate—it has long been a unifying garment in Southeast Asia, symbolizing simplicity, equality, and cultural identity.

Each panel is adorned with traditional motifs unique to each ASEAN nation, including batik, ikat, songket, and embroidered national flowers. By using upcycled materials, Sarong Harmony not only highlights cultural connections but also promotes sustainability in the creative and artistic industries.

Augmented Reality and Blockchain for Authenticity

Visitors can not only see Sarong Harmony but also experience it interactively through Augmented Reality (AR). This technology allows them to "wear" the sarong motifs digitally, letting them engage with an evolving cultural heritage.

To ensure authenticity, Artopology has also implemented blockchain technology through a Digital Certificate of Authenticity. This encrypted certificate guarantees transparency and prevents forgery, reinforcing trust in contemporary art.

A Celebration of ASEAN’s Art, Culture, and Innovation

The presence of Sarong Harmony at World Expo 2025 Osaka is a proud moment for both ASEAN and Indonesia. More than just an installation, this artwork showcases how creativity serves as a universal language, connecting people across the world. Through art, culture, and innovation, ASEAN demonstrates that diversity can be woven into harmony, strengthening unity and collective progress.
