RYOJI IKEDA IN JAKARTA: IMMERSING IN THE UNIVERSE OF DATA THROUGH AUDIOVISUAL ART
A futuristic exploration that takes visitors on a mesmerizing journey through light, sound, and algorithms
When people hear the word "data," they often think of numbers, symbols, or raw information—complex and difficult to grasp. But what if that intricate data could be transformed into an immersive art experience, blending light, sound, and mathematical computation? This is exactly what artist Ryoji Ikeda offers in his solo exhibition, Scan.Tron.Flux., held at Urban Forest Cipete, South Jakarta, from January 26 to April 13, 2025.
A Multi-Sensory Exhibition at Urban Forest Cipete
Ryoji Ikeda, an internationally renowned musician and composer, has presented exhibitions and performances across the globe. In collaboration with IndoArtNow and Art Jakarta, he brings three key works to Scan.Tron.Flux.: data.scan [n°1-9], data.tron, and data.flux [n°1]. These pieces explore how data can be reimagined as a powerful sensory experience.
Stepping into the darkened exhibition space, visitors embark on a journey through the microscopic world of human existence, technology, and natural phenomena. The first room greets them with dynamic data visualizations projected onto the ceiling, creating a mesmerizing digital sky. The next space immerses them in the binary realm of 1s and 0s. In the final section, nine tables display different data representations, offering thought-provoking insights and surprises.
Turning Data Into Art
Ikeda's work stands out for its distinctive fusion of science and digital art. Each installation in Scan.Tron.Flux. is meticulously crafted using electronic soundscapes, mathematically structured lighting, and advanced computational algorithms. The result is an atmosphere reminiscent of a science fiction film, where visitors don’t just observe and listen but also feel and experience data in an entirely new way.
As a Japanese artist based in Paris and Kyoto, Ikeda has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN in 2014 and the Japanese Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 2020. His groundbreaking works have been exhibited in leading museums and international art festivals, solidifying his reputation as a pioneer in data-driven audiovisual art.
A New Perspective on the Digital World
More than just an art exhibition, Scan.Tron.Flux. offers a deep reflection on modern life, where algorithms and data processing shape nearly every aspect of our existence. Through this exhibition, Ikeda challenges us to see data not just as numbers and symbols but as an integral force shaping the world around us. For those passionate about art and technology, this is a rare chance to explore the universe of data from an entirely new perspective. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind experience!
