FRENCH JAZZ TRIO ROUGE BRINGS VIBRANT ENERGY TO INDONESIA WITH SIX-CITY TOUR
Exploratory melodies bring a cross-continental harmony to life, blending the spirit of art and friendship into one unified rhythm
To celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between France and Indonesia, the contemporary French jazz trio ROUGE is set to perform a series of concerts and host workshops across six major Indonesian cities from July 19 to August 2, 2025. The initiative is organized by the French Embassy and Institut français Indonésie (IFI), in partnership with local and international collaborators including AJC, Forum Jazz Indonesia, Jazz Gunung, Ubud Village Jazz Festival, CNM, and SACEM.
The tour will kick off in Jakarta on July 19 with a workshop and concert as part of the Jazz Summit at IFI Jakarta. ROUGE will then take the stage in Bandung on July 20 at The Papandayan Hotel, followed by a performance in Surabaya on July 22 at Whiz Luxe Hotel. At Jazz Gunung Bromo, they will lead a workshop on July 25 and perform their main concert on July 26. The journey continues in Yogyakarta with a jam session at Jazz Mben Senen on July 28 and a featured show at ArtJog on July 29. The tour will wrap up in Bali with a final performance at the Ubud Village Jazz Festival on August 2.
ROUGE consists of pianist and composer Madeleine Cazenave, double bassist Sylvain Didou, and drummer and electronics artist Boris Louvet. Formed in late 2018, the trio has emerged as part of a new wave of French jazz artists. Their sound is known for its atmospheric, introspective qualities, blending jazz with influences from 20th-century classical music and modern pop-folk. Their latest album, Vermeilles (2024), has received critical acclaim from outlets such as Jazz Magazine, FIP, and France Musique for its emotional depth, musical courage, and refined style.
Jazz has played an important role in French music culture since it was introduced by American Allied troops during World War I. The genre quickly gained popularity on French radio and in Parisian jazz clubs, especially in the Montmartre district, which became a refuge for African American musicians fleeing segregation in the United States. Today, jazz continues to be a voice of freedom and creativity for a new generation of French artists, with France producing legendary names like Django Reinhardt, Michel Petrucciani, and Didier Lockwood.
ROUGE’s Indonesian tour goes beyond music. It represents a meaningful act of cultural exchange and diplomacy, reinforcing the strong and growing friendship between France and Indonesia through the universal language of art and music.
